BlainThePain Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 http://www.gbnreport.com/(12:01 AM): SC DT draws mixed reviews at supp draft workout... Virtually every NFL team was represented at a private workout for former Southern California DT Manuel Wright, the top-rated player available in next week's supplemental draft, on Friday at USC. The results, though, were mixed. Wright weighed in at 6-5, 329 and ran an impressive 4.97 40 time, but appeared to be out of shape; he also only posted 16 reps bech pressing 225 pounds; for the record, that well below what is the norm for DTs. Wright is now expected to be a 3rd or 4th round pick at Thursday's supplemental draft. Quote
schweinhart Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 What a terrible rep showing It's as bad as his 40 time was good but upper body strength is obviously more important for a DT than flat speed. Plus the low rep doesn't speak well of his work ethic or desire to succeed. My old grandad could match what Wright did.But that kind of speed should keep 3-4 teams like the Fins (if they really switch) in the running to play Wright at DE. Quote
Who? Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 With his strength he will be playing in a 3-4 defense it looks like, I do hope the Brownies snatch him though. Quote
BlainThePain Posted July 10, 2005 Author Report Posted July 10, 2005 Strength doesn't matter that much unless you plan on him having an impact right away. Wright is a project that is going to take a couple of years to mold. Two years in an NFL strength and conditioning program and he will be caught up to everyone else. We have a top notch strength and conditioning program too. The scary thing is that he wasn't in shape and still ran that fast. I think he could become faster than that. Maybe even a 4.8 40. If he can run that fast being out of shape, I'd say that means he really knows how to use his weight. I think he has star written all over him and if he wasn't dumber than a box of rocks, he would have had a chance to show that at the college level. Quote
JPW Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 How did he do in college anyway? He hardly played at all ...He had Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson playing in front of him. Quote
LABengalsFan09 Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 But when he did, he was a beast. They were a phenomenal 3-man rotation. I always remember him vs. Cal and Oklahoma, he was in the QBs faces a lot.(Please remove all homerism from post.)Now would I draft him this year, not until the 5th round. Quote
BlainThePain Posted July 12, 2005 Author Report Posted July 12, 2005 I think he goes to the Dolphins for a third round pick. Quote
Defender Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 I'm not that surprised. If this guy was any good he would have been taken in the Draft back in April. When was the last player taken in the supplemental draft supposed to have been really good, anyone know? That doesn't include guys taken who became really good NFL players. No one comes to mind right now... Quote

The reason Wright wasn't in the April draft was because he was wanting to return to USC, but he later found out that he would be academically ineligable next season so he threw his name in for the supplemental draft. schweinhart Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 I think he goes to the Dolphins for a third round pick. I'll guess the Fins use their 3rd on WR Roscoe Crosby and Wright comes down to the lottery in the 3rd between the Jags and and the Bengals. Quote
StripesNTn Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 With his size and speed and apparent lack of strength, doesn't he fit a DE mold more so than a DT. Might be a good pass rusher.3-4 may also be good fit Quote
Irish Bengal Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 Bernie Kosar was a supp draft player. Quote
