walshfan Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 If Im not mistaken didnt Miller play against the Jets with a sprained ankle and Johnson had a very sore shoulder?? They kept subbing for each other...Johnson Miller and the rest will get their chances to prove just how much PT they'll get.. Nice dilemma to have for a LB coach! Quote
Spain Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 Made me laugh Jditty, How about Perry and Askew combine to make really injured. Quote
derekshank Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 Pollack isn't a defensive end, he isn't a linebacker, he is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.This sounds like blatant homerism to me. Hey... if he's a football player, lets waive Kitna, and have Pollack back up Carson Palmer. It will save roster space and cash. Frankly you sound like a blantant pessimist to me. If Marvin Lewis says he can do it, NOONE in the league short of Bill Belichek is going to know better what David Pollack can do. If it's homerism to say Marvin Lewis knows linebackers, and knows what it takes to get the job done at that position, then I certainly am a homer. On the other hand, any asshat who says otherwise is a moron but not a homer. I'm glad you pay no attention to the things I say, because it gives me the opportunity to repost my opinions. If I didn't have that, what else would I do with my lunch break?Find a place where I said Pollack wouldn't be able to make the transition... You won't, because I never said it. The only thing I tried to do was give another side of the argument, claiming that I doubt that after his rookie year he will be a lock for the hall of fame. I apologize for my "pessimistic" but reasonable expectations. However, here is some samples of things I actually said.I do believe he will be better than Boulware eventuallyand who could forgetI'm not against Pollack. I am furiously Pro-Pollack. I like everything about the guy... his attitude, his work ethic, his desire to be productiveSure, I qualified such comments with the fact that it will take some time before the transition is complete, but that is merely stating the obvious point that many Bengals fans seem to forget. If you hear non-Bengal analysts, they will say that they are big on him, but are curious about how quickly the transition will come. I apologize for attempting to be realistic, attempting to value the opinion of some unbiased experts. - It won't happen again, my bad. Quote

backerman Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 Big UGA Bulldog fan here. I've been lurking for a few weeks to catch the comments on the UGA draftees the Bengals snagged. I've watched both players for the entirety of their careers. They were both fantastic collge football players, but... David Pollack was/is a GREAT football player. I'm one of those crazy football fans who tapes most of the games. On the game tapes, I could often see Odell overpursuing, checking into the wrong play, or missing tackles. I NEVER saw Pollack make any such fundamental errors. Sure, he got blocked pretty well from time to time - that is, when the other team sent an extra man to help out with #47. The guy is a perfectionist to the point of being a little bit crazy, and plays with unmatched intensity. The downside: His arms are short.I've noticed a trend of Bengals fans jumping on the "Pollack will be good, but Odell is probably going to be better" bandwagon. Odell is an athletic, hard-hitting linebacker with huge upside, don't get me wrong. But after watching both for 4 years(Odell for 3), saying Odell is near the level of player David Pollack is just sounds silly. Another Bulldog fan here who started posting on this board after the recent draft. And I pretty well agree with every thing you've said.I too have been watching each guy for thier entire careers. Odell Thurman was a VERY GOOD linebacker for the dawgs. He was especially known as a big hitter and physical enforcer. But at times, you really couldn't notice if he was playing or sitting out. He wasn't consistent at that level. He was definitley prone to mistakes that come along with his physical and reckless play. David Pollack, on the other hand, was the best Defensive Player I can ever remember watching in college football. (Of course my memory only goes back to the mid 80's). He made a significant impact on 99% of the plays. I'm talking about requiring double teams with regularity or creating penetration and all manor of havoc. If not flat out making the play. Thats not to say that he never got blocked 1 vs 1. I can remember him having some problems with Marcus Mcneil of Auburn this year (6' 9", 340lbs and 1st rd draft pick next year) I guess those arms really do hurt him sometimes., But even Mcneil would often get help from a chipping back, which restricted Pollack to mostly power or inside moves, effectivley taking away his outside speed rush. At the college level he looked like a combination of Tedy Bruschi and Lawrence Taylor. Now, Another great Dawg, Herschel Walker, had a similar level of dominance at Georgia and went on to have a VERY GOOD, but not HoF, Pro Career. So I'm NOT going to garauntee Pollack will be the next LT at the Pro level. I can only attest to what he did in college. Quote
backerman Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 Now that I think of it. up until POLLACK. I held Takeo Spikes as the best defensive player I ever saw in the SEC. I remember the Vols national championship year, Jamal Lewis ran ALL OVER georgias Defense. It would take 2-3 guys to tackle him everytime and even then he was dragging our D for extra yds. But then against Auburn, I remember Jamal and TAkeo met head to head 3 times, 1 on 1, in the hole. All 3 times Takeo took him down witn no YAC whatsoever. And I said to myself, "man, that Takeo spikes is a STUD, hope the Falcons draft him." And then we went and drafted Keith Brooking, which has worked out okay too. But thats a story for another day....
