Bengals extend Georgetown contract

Deal goes through 2006; team to visit Ky. Speedway

By Mark Curnutte

Enquirer staff writer

The Bengals and Georgetown College have agreed on a one-year contract extension that will have the team train at the central Kentucky campus through 2006.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis made the announcement Tuesday while speaking at an event sponsored by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce.

"We're pleased to have extended this relationship for another year," Lewis said. "The facilities at Georgetown College are excellent for our purposes. They were designed with an NFL training camp in mind, and they remain state-of-the-art by league standards."

The Bengals have trained at Georgetown since 1997. Players and coaches will report to camp July 28, and the camp will be open to the public beginning with the team's first practice July 29. The Bengals will break camp Aug. 17.

The Bengals also released a tentative practice schedule and schedule of camp hours Tuesday.

The Bengals will hold 22 practices at camp. Seven practices will be at night, an event popular with fans.

Three times during training camp, players and coaches will be available to sign autographs. And a fireworks show will be held after a night practice Aug. 10.

The intrasquad scrimmage will be Friday night Aug. 5, followed on Saturday by the mock game.

Lewis split the weekend into two parts upon his arrival in 2003, and both days are well attended by fans.

From Cincinnati, drive south on Interstate 75, approximately 70 miles; take Exit 126 and turn right off the ramp onto U.S. 460 West. Stay on that road for about two miles before turning right on Lemons Mill Road. Look for signs to the camp on the right in about half a mile.

VROOM: The Bengals announced Tuesday that players and coaches would visit Kentucky Speedway on Thursday and tour the track and participate in high-speed rides in stock cars driven by David Green and Clint Boyer.

Lewis wants his players exposed to the concept of playing fast.

A former Washington Redskins assistant coach, Lewis visited the North Carolina headquarters of the NASCAR team owned by Redskins coach Joe Gibbs.

After visiting Kentucky Speedway, the Bengals will begin their mandatory minicamp Friday through Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

Here's to hoping David Green and Clint Boyer aren't Browns fans. <_< Wouldn't want to see any kind of "accidents"

Good point. I thought the same thing too. Aren't we afraid of "non-football" realated injuries?
