So what about Stacey Andrews?

I could see Andrews going in as a TE (or OT) on short yardage and goal line....

He did in fact go in at TE (extra-OT) at least a time or two last season ...

He wasn't used as a tight end, he was used as an extra tackle. He was asked to block at the line, not catch the ball or block on the move from the backfield.

Actually, I believe he reported as Tackle eligible, on at least one occassion that I remember, which means he WAS an eligible receiver.

I see your ability to read needs work. I didn't say he wasn't an eligible receiver, I said he wasn't asked to catch the damned ball. He was asked to stand there and block.

An excerpt from the bio of Stacy Andrews:

'Standout track performer who garnered All-American honors as a weight man…Incredibly quick for a player his size (4.96 in the 40-yard dash)…Flexible with quick feet and good balance in his kick slide…Does a nice job of getting his hands up quickly to lock on, steer and gain leverage over the defender…Shows exceptional explosion when running to the second level and has the field awareness to neutralize the linebackers working in space… Despite his size, he stays low in his pads with a wide leg base, which makes it very tough for defenders to rock him back on his heels…Works well with the guard on combo blocks, keeping his head on a swivel while looking for secondary targets to hit.'

You're right, this sounds like a guy that couldn't possibly handle lead blocking on a simple goal line play. Hell, I can probably even teach you how to do it in under 5 minutes.

That's what Tight Ends do. They block. Or they run routes. But they still block. So technically, he was a blocking tight end. ^_^

How did this thread turn into an argument about the specifics of what makes a tight end different from a tackle (or a "tackle eligible")?

Luckily, this all really matters a lot in the debate of Stacey Andrews.

Since the recent trend has been to use other position players as fb on the goal line, I made the mistake of observing that nobody would be better suited for this role than a huge guy with freakish athletic ability for his size. Apparently he has enough to worry about, like trying to figure out what the hell Paul Alexander is talking about...

Somebody remarked that if he is skilled enough to play TE ("tackle eligible") than he could handle fb with no problem. Does that clear things up for ya tiger?
