Three Bearcats taken in draft

Guidugli says he'll sign with Titans as free agent

By Bill Koch

Enquirer staff writer

They all thought they'd be drafted higher, but none of the three Cincinnati products was complaining when their call finally came.

For defensive end Trent Cole, it came on day two of the NFL draft from the Philadelphia Eagles, who picked him in the fifth round with the 146th pick overall. Before the round was over, UC linebacker Tyjuan Hagler was taken by the Indianapolis Colts with the 173rd pick overall.

Cornerback Daven Holly was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers with the first pick of the seventh and final round, No. 230 overall.

But there would be no call for quarterback Gino Guidugli, UC's career passing leader with 11,453 yards and 78 touchdowns. He said Sunday night he'll sign a free agent contract with the Tennessee Titans.

"I think it's a good situation," Guidugli said. "I talked to their quarterbacks coach and he said they've only got two quarterbacks on their roster right now and both of them are injured.

"I was disappointed (over not getting drafted), but I'll get over it. I'm going to be in a camp somewhere and that's where I have to prove myself."

There was no such disappointment for Cole and the two other former UC players who were drafted.

Cole, who grew up as a running back idolizing Emmitt Smith and wore his No. 22 until he got to UC, said Sunday was the day he has been working toward his entire life.

"I based my life around football," Cole said, "football and sports in general since elementary school. That's all I've been doing my whole life. It's made me the person that I am now. It got me here. It means a lot to me."

Cole, who finished second on UC's career tackles for loss list with 48 and third in sacks with 18.5, played mostly defensive end at UC.

He said he was told he would be used both as an end and as an outside linebacker by the Eagles.

"I think it'll be an easy adjustment for me," Cole said. "I played linebacker in the Senior Bowl and it was easier than playing D-line because I had so much room to move around. It gives you more of a chance to be an athlete."

Hagler said he "almost had a heart attack" when he got the call from the Colts.

"It's like another chapter in my life has been closed," he said. "All I've got to do now is just succeed in the NFL. Being drafted is one of the happiest moments in my life."

Holly had to wait until the final round before he was picked, but he said he was never nervous about what might happen.

"I knew I would be drafted," Holly said. "If not, I knew I would make somebody's roster as a free agent."

In San Francisco, Holly will be reunited with former UC defensive coordinator A.J. Christoff, now the secondary coach with the 49ers.

Fourteen quarterbacks were taken in the draft ahead of Guidugli, including Matt Cassel, Southern California's backup.

Guidugli wasn't the only notable quarterback who didn't get a call. Oklahoma's Jason White, the 2003 Heisman Tropy winner, was bypassed along with Hawaii's Timmy Chang and Memphis' Danny Wimprine.

But that didn't ease the disappointment for Guidugli.

"In the long run, when you get by the heartache of not getting drafted," said his agent, Mike McCartney, "the most important thing is to make a team and I think he's got a great chance to do that."

NOTEWORTHY: Former Milford High School standout Rick Razzano (fullback, Mississippi) was selected in the seventh round by Tampa Bay

Area players taking a shot

Takavitz, Martin on tryout basis

By Mark Curnutte

Enquirer staff writer

Beneath their smiles and pleasant demeanor, rookie offensive linemen Kyle Takavitz and Clay Martin are all business.

Takavitz, a three-year starter and two-year captain at the University of Cincinnati, arrived Saturday morning as a tryout candidate at the Bengals rookie mini-camp.

Martin, who played at NAIA Georgetown (Ky.) College, also is on a tryout and practiced Friday.

Seven players are participating in mini-camp on a tryout basis.

"The one thing I asked for going into this situation was a chance," said Takavitz, a 310-pound guard from Dublin, Ohio. "I know I wasn't one of the 'big guys' on the radar. But if given a shot, I'm going to give it my best shot, and hopefully good things will come from it."

Martin, a 300-pound guard, is from LaGrange, Ky.

"All my coaches at Georgetown and my family are excited I've gotten the opportunity," Martin said. "It means a lot just to be here. I'm here trying to stay here. Whether I'm on the practice squad or I'm out of here, I want to make a good enough showing to maybe get into another camp some where."

ACHES AND PAINS: Kansas tight end Lyonel Anderson suffered a left ankle injury and was limping around the locker room. ... Offensive lineman Steve Viera of UCLA was using a crutch Saturday after hurting his ankle during practice Friday.

SORE ARM: Josh Haldi is the only quarterback in mini-camp, and coaches are carefully making sure he doesn't throw out his arm in practices.

Haldi doesn't mind. The three-year starter at Northern Illinois, one of 11 rookie free agents signed to two-year contracts by the Bengals, sees the mini-camp as his first step toward competing for a roster spot come training camp in July and August.

"I can't wait to get back here in May and get going and be around the guys," said Haldi, 27-9 as a starter for the Mid-American Conference Huskies.

"Hopefully being up here before training camp will help, and I want to know everything when I go into training camp," he said, "so I don't have to think. And then I can compete."

NUMBERS GAME: First-round linebacker David Pollack is wearing No. 99, second-round linebacker Odell Thurman 45. Third-round wide receiver Chris Henry is wearing No. 15.

Thurman, who wore 33 at Georgia, will have to switch to a number in the 50s or 90s once the regular season starts, per league rules.
