Who's your 1st round guy on defense?

I was assuming that Merriman and Derrick Johnson would be gone for sure by the time the Bengals draft at 17. There is a chance that any of these guys on the poll would be there for the taking at 17.

Of course, Merriman or Johnson could be there, but I highly doubt it and I think that everyone would select them over almost any guy on this poll (especially Johnson).

I'm leaning towards Erasmus James. I like Marcus Spears, everyone knows that, but considering that I do think James is the better pass rusher, I think we'll need that especially this year if Cleveland lands Edwards and the Ravens land another receiver to go along with Derrick Mason.

Trading down is an option, but if Erasmus James is there, if he's healthy, he's unstoppable, and I'm pretty confident we'll get more out of him in '05 than we got out of Chris Perry in '04. :player:

I have to agree with the latest post, while adding David Pollack if the Bengals were able to move down and get an extra pick.

It looks like our beloved Thomas Davis may not be available at 17. Here are a few excerpts from Geoff Hobson's article today on bengals.com (coming from an article regarding a media mock draft):

If Kansas City doesn’t do it at No. 15, New Orleans will at No. 16. Break Bengaldom’s heart and select Georgia safety Thomas Davis...

16. SAINTS - Thomas Davis, S, Georgia; Jeff Duncan, New Orleans Times-Picayune: They might think about Oklahoma tackle Jammal Brown, but Saints head coach Jim Haslett has singled out Davis as his guy and plans to put him at right outside linebacker. Haslett, a former NFL linebacker, thinks Davis is one of the best tacklers he’s seen in years.

With the Saints ranked last in defense and 30th against the run, Duncan has seen a lot of the same names linked with New Orleans and the Bengals. They also could be looking at Auburn corner Carlos Rogers and Northwestern defensive tackle Luis Castillo.

15. CHIEFS - "Pac Man" Jones, CB West Virginia; Randy Covitz, Kansas City Star: Davis doesn’t figure to get past the Chiefs even though they have both starters back and they just picked up free-agent Sammy Knight.

Wow i'm only 1 of 2 that want demarcus ware. :(

Btw I'd be very very happy with us selecting either one of the top 2 tackles...

So well the ravens don't get one, and we have a great back up in case levi or willie go down....like they did each in the past 2 years but played injured or came back early to play anyways.

Saints will be all over Thomas Jones at 16. Jim Haslett already said so. Merriman's stock has dropped. Ware's has risen so much that he will be the Cowboy's pick at #11

Does any of the trading going on above us, affect us? Also do we try to trade up a few spots to sneak over the Saints if Davis is really the guy we want?

Why would anyone want Erasmus James ? He's a injury waiting to happen. I like Merriman. If he is gone ,I say we trade down and draft Poole. He is already being compared to Ed Reed. With the extra pick we could pick up a lb like Rudd or Blackstock. Two other lb's would be good pickups in the later rounds. They are Grgsby and Boley. REDSFAN2510

Thomas Davis is too big and slow to play in coverage. In the Bengals system the safety needs to play coverage. Most teams, scouts and draft experts project him as a Linebacker and he has a good chance going in the 2nd round because of that and the fact he is a tweener(oversized for a safety and a ltttle lite for a LB.

I`ll trust Marvin...

At 230 pounds, Georgia's Thomas Davis, a hard-hitting run-stopper, is the top-rated strong safety available.

"I think he's a fine prospect," Lewis said of Davis Tuesday in a pre-draft news conference.

Reluctant to reveal the Bengals' draft strategy, Lewis did say, when asked, that Davis could both play the run and cover receivers in the pass game.

Don't just trust Marvin (although I'd agree that that would be enough), trust the facts. Thomas Davis is the fastest of the top ten safeties in the draft (from his pro day forty), and the second fastest of all the safeties. Check out the link:

From Hobson article about the ML Tuesday news conference:

Yes, he does think Georgia’s Thomas Davis can cover well enough to play safety in the NFL. No, he doesn’t think No. 17 is too high to take a safety in light of the fact the Ravens took Pro Bowler Ed Reed at No. 24 in 2002, and the Steelers took Troy Polamalu at No. 16 in 2003.

Lewis offers few hints

I could see us trading up a couple spots to nab Davis/Merriman/Ware.

No/no/no.

Just my opinion, but I'm pretty confident the Bengals can get as good a player at #17 as they could drafting a few spots higher, and moving up will cost far more than I'd be interested in spending.

But is just getting a good player good enough? Or is there someone there that will elevate this team beyond that?
