Annually, NFL executives are polled by The Sporting News to select the winner. This year, Pioli received 29 of the 60 votes to become the 34th recipient of the award. "This award is a direct reflection of the trust and support given by Robert and Jonathan Kraft," said Pioli. "I am very grateful for that. They have been tremendously supportive. The award is also a by-product of great teamwork within our organization, starting with Bill Belichick and including our assistant coaches, our players and our entire scouting staff. To be mentioned in the same group of past winners such as Bill Polian, George Young, Ron Wolf, Al Davis and Paul Brown is very humbling."Pioli, who turns 39 tomorrow, is the youngest executive to ever receive the award. The Washingtonville, N.Y. native earned Division II honors as a defensive tackle at Central Connecticut State (1983-87). After serving two seasons as a graduate assistant at Syracuse and two seasons as an assistant coach at Murray State, Pioli left the coaching ranks to join Bill Belichick's personnel staff with the Cleveland Browns in 1992. He spent four seasons with the Browns before the franchise moved to Baltimore in 1996. In 1997, he was hired by Coach Belichick as the director of pro personnel for the New York Jets. He joined the Patriots in February of 2000 and quickly implemented a philosophy shared with Coach Belichick that proved to be successful in rebuilding teams in both Cleveland and New York. In four seasons since joining the Patriots, the team has won two Super Bowl Championships. In 2001, following the franchise's first Super Bowl title, Pioli was named the NFL Executive of the Year by the Dallas Morning News.

Jonboat
Bengals.com reported Sharpers agent as saying Bengals offer was very generous & comparable to Seattles, he kind of wrestled with the decision. It didn't sound like it based all on $$ . I think they have been offering fair $$ to FA's but not at the expense of the future. I think the focus this year has been keeping our Off. together, a smart move IMO. My feeling is if they go to another club for more $$ then piss on them, I'd rather have a player that wants to be here rather than be here just because of $$. I also don't think we're in as bad of shape as people think LJ had a very good rookie season & watch out for KAbdullah he was making a big impression on the coaches during training camp last year, I think he may play a big role this year. I know it was just traing camp but he was laying people out! There also should be some good LB's available in the draft & the way our picks in recent (ML) years have turned out I wouldn't mind seeing them trade down for extra picks! Old schooler is right if something good happens it's because of ML but if something bad happens everyone wants to blame MB. GO BENGALS!!! kingwilly
I agree that we probably made a good effort to get him but also knew that there are very good LB's in the draft.I disagree with Jonboat regarding the "don't think we're in as bad of shape as people think..." The Benglas LB corps was decimated by injuries and ineffectiveness. Dare I say even Simmons might have lost a step? Hardy is one signing away from being cut. Webster may never get all the way back and when he was healthy, he overpursued and missed angles all the time. Abdullah is still an unknown, still healing. Caleb Miller looked awful early but got better, then got hurt. Landon was about the only shining point and that, too, was only part way through the year. The Bengals LB corp needed to upgrade and it has not so far this FA season. Sharper is gone. Maybe Chad Brown will become available.Either way the LB position needs work. There is talent on the roster but this will be year 3 into the Marvin Plan; the time to win is now. To me, "winning now" typically means signing a very good FA or two to fill the glaring holes on the roster. LB is one spot.
Jonboat
kingwilly, Good points & I do agree that we need to address the LB position. That may have been a poor choice of words but, I got the feeling of doom & gloom since we didn't get Sharper. I guess, I think we can still get a LB through FA & the draft to help us. Just going by what Sharpers agent said it wasn't about the money & I think everyone(myself included) assumed we'd have the upper hand because him & ML was friends.I was as disappointed as the next guy that we didn't get him but I think keeping the core of our offense, basically FA signings, was a smart move but may limit the amount of $$ we're willing to give other FA this year. KAbdullah is unproven but I just have a feeling this is a guy to keep an eye on GO BENGALS!!! Jonboat
