Bengals to pick WR in 1st round?

The reason they don't need help with the pass defense is because Madieu is at FS and is a pass-defending machine.

But say they move him to SS to shore up the run defense...what do they do with the FS position? Draft or fill it in with one of the guys they already have?

Not that we really have to worry about this...Marvin will draft a SS or get one in FA before he moves Madieu. Why ruin a good thing?

Do you mean FS?  Personally, I think Madieu could be a star at SS.

I view Madieu as more as a FS due to his excellent ability in coverage. I think Thomas Davis would be awesome at SS if he fell to us, he is a Roy Williams type of player who loves playing up in the box and crushes people when he hits them.

Although the Bengals' strong safeties cover a lot, I think it would be a waste to put Williams permanently at strong because of his coverage abilities. There's nothing wrong with free safeties that can tackle.

I believe this is a moot point, simply because in Coach Lewis' system, he requires the Safeties to be interchangable.

Interchangeable safeties are definitely the goal and the Bengals are in the ballpark with Madieu, K2, and Herring. However, all 3 are suspect as the 8th in the box vs. run, especially vs. bigger backs like Jamal, Staley, Bettis, Droughns, etc..

Madieu is the most versatile of the 3 and the best in each aspect as far as vs. run, free safety coverage, and man coverage. Hopefully Herring can play all year because he's solid vs. run w/ smaller, speedier backs and should improve his coverage. None are as good vs. run as Beckett was, but it seems like he might be headed for retirement.

But it's hard to get the best of both worlds at safety. There's only so many Rodney Harrisons and Sean Taylors.

Bengals could make do w/ what they have at safety, though, because the main problem vs. the run is the DTs. Still figure a safety will be drafted but Mitchell might also be back.

Oh that's right, this thread is WR in 1st :D

I say no. I'm leaning back towards Alex Smith at TE w/ 1st pick. Should be able trade down several spots to add a third or couple foruth rounders extra.

Quality WRs should still be available in rds after 1st. I do like Clayton alot, though, and it would be hard for Bengals to pass on him. Not sure Reggie Brown isn't better than Roddy White, who I did see twice and does definitely have excellent skills and speed.

I'm thinking options of Terrence Murphy in 2nd, JR Russell in 3rd, Steve Savoy in 4th, Craig Bragg in 5th, and Paris Warren in 6th.

I'm just glad that the Bengals and others have NOT mentioned getting WR Chris Henry -- a real attitude case.

He's a cross between Carl Perkins and Randy Moss -- not as fast as Moss, but certain the temperament of Carl and Randy

Immediate Needs:

1. Center - Rich Braham won't play forever, and Fontenot was brought in over rest of the depth chart.

2. DT - Tony Williams won't be back. Langston Moore is more of a situational player. Askew played more DE than DT in college and must be considered an odd man out if necessary.

3. Safety - Rogers Beckett can't stay healthy, and offers nothing in coverage only run support. Herring offers nothing in deep recognition !

Long Term Needs:

1. DE - Age of Clemons, inexperience of Geathers, and lack of depth.

2. Wr - Once on of our great strengths, now a position of liability. P-dub is back and is expensive. We probably wont' be able to keep T.J. and Rudi, and a RB will get the nod over a backup Wr anyday of the week. K-W has to come on like Gang-busters.

3. CB - Tory James will be 32. Dennis Weathersby might not play...ever.? Greg Brooks will have to play catch-up.

4. LB - Hardy will be too expensive to keep. Caleb Miller didn't progress as fast as Landon Johnson.Khalid Abdullah is coming back from a major injury as is Nate Webster.

We may have to trade down out of necessity rather than availability of good talent.
