They said there was no evidence that Lewis has interviewed anyone else for the job.Bresnahan may be tapped today to run defense By Mark CurnutteEnquirer staff writer Chuck Bresnahan could be announced as early as today as Bengals defensive coordinator.Coaches have had time off since the end of the season, a stretch that ended Monday with the Martin Luther King Jr.holiday.The coaching staff, minus former defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, let go Jan. 5 by Lewis, reports back to work today.Bresnahan is believed to be the only candidate interviewed by Lewis. The former four-year Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator joined the Bengals staff as an assistant coach in the spring. At that time, Lewis said Bresnahan's role would be to serve as "an extra set of eyes" and work with the Bengals offense to analyze opposing defenses.Lewis and Bresnahan's paths crossed for the first time during the Browns' transition to Baltimore in 1995 and 1996. Bresnahan was linebackers coach for the Browns when Lewis was hired as defensive coordinator.Bresnahan, now 44, spent two more seasons as linebackers coach at Indianapolis in 1996 and 1997 before joining the Raiders staff. Oakland won the AFC West in his first three seasons as defensive coordinator, 2000-02.Bresnahan played linebacker at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1979-82. From 1983-86, he was a commissioned officer at the Adak (Alaska) Naval Air Station - where he was a supply and nuclear weapons safety officer. His coaching career started in college with positions at Navy, Maine and Georgia Tech.Bresnahan has earned the respect of many Bengals players."If he gets promoted, we'll be fine," defensive lineman Duane Clemons said. "He knows what it takes to win. He's been to the show before."Bresnahan was Raiders defensive coordinator in Super Bowl XXXVII, which Tampa Bay won. jjakq27
No announcement today. From Bengals.com today.Lewis to shorten training camp1-18-05, 4:20 p.m. BY GEOFF HOBSON Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis didn’t announce his new defensive coordinator Tuesday and wouldn’t put a time frame on the decision to replace Leslie Frazier. All indications still point to defensive assistant Chuck Bresnahan getting the nod, but Lewis wouldn’t say if he has interviewed candidates from other teams. Lewis did say he planned to cut training camp short by a week this season in an effort to avoid the 1-4 starts that have marred the club’s 8-8 records the past two years. Instead of breaking from Georgetown College after the third preseason game, Lewis said he’s looking to break after the second game so his players have a longer time to get settled in Cincinnati before the regular-season opener. In a session with local beat reporters, Lewis also said that any position other than quarterback or cornerback is on the table for the April draft. He also said it’s too early to say if wide receiver Peter Warrick (knee, leg) is going to be ready for the voluntary camps, but he also said he expects him to be healthy because both he and the team will keep a closer eye on his rehab.
