Kirkendall Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) - Alex Smith apparently is ready for another challenge. The Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday that the Utah quarterback will forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft. The first Heisman Trophy finalist in school history, Smith led the Utes to an unbeaten 12-0 season. He capped his brilliant season by completing 29-of-37 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-7 rout of Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday night.According to the report, Smith will announce his decision on Monday or Tuesday. The 6-4 Smith, who could be a first-round pick in April's draft, finished the regular season with 28 touchdown passes and ran for 10 more scores. He also had the second-best passing efficiency mark (174.9) in the nation. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 If he can gain a little weight he might be a tough QB. He's a smart guy with good accuracy and an above average strong arm Quote
chrishcovga Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Since I think Matt Leinart will stay in school for his Senior year, Smith could jump all the way into the top Ten. * Obvious that Aaron Rodgers will be the first overall pick to the 49ers!! Of course there's still a hundred + days till the draft !! Green Bay wants their Quarterback of the Future, They probably need to go after Smith or Charlie Frye from Akron. Frye may not have played against top competiton, but he's got a really nice release, and a strong enough arm to succeed in the NFL. Quote
schweinhart Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 * Obvious that Aaron Rodgers will be the first overall pick to the 49ers!! Of course there's still a hundred + days till the draft !! Rodgers does look like the Niners 1st pick if Leinart don't declare and the Niners don't trade down. But the Niners also got 2 UFA WRs in Wilson and Conway who they may not re-sign. They still keep a young WR corps in Brandon Lloyd. Arnaz Battle, Rashaun Woods, and Derrick Hamilton, but the Niners might take a good long look at Braylon Edwards at the #1 overall.Got to figure the Niners would swap their #1 to the Chargers if the Bolts franchised Brees and then traded him to Niners. But the Chargers got themselves in a major pickle w/ Brees. Hard to trade the QB who just led the team to a division title.Got to also figure w/ Walter questionable now because of his shoulder injury that Alex Smith should climb, especially for a team like the Packers, who like you say, are in the market for a QB of future and could give Smith a chance to get phsyically stronger behind Favre for a couple years. But there's a lot of murk at the NFL QB position for teams ahead of the Packers in the draft. Parcells might pick Smith at #11 or 20 and maybe even like Orlovsky ahead of Smith. Quote
chrishcovga Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Don't forget about Kyle Orton either ... He's gonna have an opportunity to show why he was a Heisman candidate before Purdue was shown for what it was. A good school, not a great school, talent wise.Andrew Walter should be healthy after the Combine Workouts. But I doubt seriously teams like Green Bay, Kansas City, Tennessee, or the Dolphins for that matter could let a guy like him go into day 2 of the draft if they haven't addressed their QB need by then.To be honest with you, Jason Campbell may just move up to the 2nd round if his workouts are promising! * On a side note, Cincy' needs to address it's long term plans for a cheaper backup to Carson Palmer. When the 5th and 6th round come around in April, It's gonna get real interesting around here... Quote
