NFL jersey numbers

Haven't been keeping up on rule changes but as far as I was aware, wide receivers wear jersy numbers in the "80" series. Keyshawn Johnson (# 19) and several others have numbers in the "teen" series, which I thought was reserved for quartebacks and kickers.

Also, there's a tight end on the Vikings that wears #44 (can't recall his name). Thought the 40's were worn by running backs and DB's.

So what's the lowdown on the jersey numbering system?

It's like a Social Norm. The rules really aren't in place--unless you are a 50-79 number on Offense Only.

Those numbers usually have to check in with a referee, if they're eligible.

Otherwise, they're not to catch the ball.

Usually though, the social norm went like this:

1-19: QB

20-35: TB

36-49: FB

50-59, 60, 70: Center

61-69: Guard

71-79: Tackle

80-87: WR

88-89: Tight End

That's just the offensive side....

;)
