Bengals cut Coles

Very happy about the move and agree with an earlier post about it being very un-Bengal like.

I hope this means they really go after some WR who will be available. Can't say as I would be thrilled with Walter.

I just view him as a good (see not great) WR, that isn't really the playmaker this offense needs at the position.

I like Walter, just not here.

Go get us a playmaker Mikey !!!

Here's what I was thinking, but don't know if it will turn out the way I want it to.

#1. The Bengals cut Coles who was due to make (7 mil ??) this season and for a couple after that.

#2. The #21 pick last year was Alex Mack who got a 5 yr, 10.5 mil deal with 8.1 guaranteed.

#3. This year's #21 should see an increase to Mack's contract.

#4. Marshall hit incentives that pushed his '09 salary to 2.2 million and the Broncos were trying to get him "closer" to the top tier guys.

#5. Closer to the top tier guys would put him around 7 mil per year.

There is no reason they can't afford Marshall. The question becomes more of, do they want him ??

It almost comes off that the Bengals would SAVE money by basically giving Marshall Coles contract plus a bump and trading thier first to the Broncos.

Well, I do think this move points to the Bengals trying to make some sort of move. They already needed WR help, and cutting Coles now without getting a replacement would be forcing them to reach for a WR in round 1... and if they were going to rely on the draft, I think they would have waited to cut Coles.

That said... I think people who are hoping for Marshall or Boldin are dreaming. How about Austin Miles? Not sure what the price tag will be, but he certainly would meet the need they have without a pricetag the likes of Boldin or Marshall.

The pricetag for Austin is a 1st and a 3rd and you're assuming that the Cowboys couldn't beat an offer that the Bengals proposed. Marhsall and Boldin are much more likely because their teams are open to getting rid of them. The Cowboys want Austin as their #1 WR.

Miles got the highest tender of a 1st and 3rd. That being said, the Cowboys are trying to work a long term deal and he's going to get paid as well. Once again though with Coles getting 7 million per year in his contract and us not having to pay a 1st round pick around the 3 million per year this year's #21 will get, why couldn't we add Marshall (from a money standpoint) ?? He incentives paid him 2.2 million last year and the Broncos and Marshall were working on a deal that got him "close" to the top tier guys. I think 7-8 million per year would work.

That's what Coles was making. Is Marshall not worth that ??

Not being funny, because I know Marshall would come with baggage, just trying to reason it out. That being said, there are reports on NFL Network this morning that Marshall may be able to be had for less than the first.

You're right, Jerrah will match anything to keep Austin. I like Marshall. He's a goofball, but it's almost all stupid off-the-field crap. I give him a pass with the McDaniels thing because that guy seems like a complete ass. He produces on the field and seems not to possess the TO team destruction gene.

If they can get him at a reasonable price, do it. Hell, this move should have Mikey's name on it, getting a troubled but talented player at (presumably) a discount.

So we all agree the need for a proven WR is so great it would be prudent to trade for Marshall, thereby ignoring his role in a nightclub incident that resulted in a teammate lying dead in a stretch limo?

Perhaps there's a little of the Great Redeemer in all of us, ehh?

"We are the bastard sons of...(wait for it).....Mike Brown."

I was waiting for that, I knew I could count on you. I considered the nightclub thing. From all accounts what Marshall did was get too lippy with the wrong guy. It's not like he wanted the trouble, as far as I can tell. I also think that incident affected him pretty strongly. I'd be surprised if he stirred it up in a nightclub again.

When I grow up, I want to be a bastard son of Lippincott.

Don't know if it's been discussed before, but this is pretty interesting commentary from Coles, via the NJ Star Ledger. Maybe The Carson is the reason he's no longer here:

“I didn’t fit into the offense at all,” Coles told The Star-Ledger Thursday

“(Quarterback) Carson (Palmer) wasn’t comfortable with me. He likes tall receivers. He told the coaches he wasn’t comfortable throwing to me."

Coles, who has had two previous stints with the Jets, said he’d like to end his career as a Jet.

“They’ll be the first team we call to see if they’re interested,” he said.

He mocked a gang member who was already making threats of gunplay by pointing out how the guy didn't have a weapon on him in the club. So of course the gang member left the club to get a weapon....presumably to shoot Marshall. Instead, a teammate was killed. Regardless, without Marshall's actions it's very likely no shooting takes place at all.

I also think that incident affected him pretty strongly. I'd be surprised if he stirred it up in a nightclub again.

I agree, and I think Marshall would be well served by a fresh start in another city. But let's not downplay what happened as stupid off-the-field stuff.
