jjvolt
just saw something interesting and enlightening over on mikebrownsucks.com, of all places. reports are coming out that cedric benson suffered from celiac disease and has changed his diet accordingly. good for him (and us).it's hard to believe that a man could actually endure the rigors of life in the nfl with this disease. it's no wonder that he stuggled early on his career if this report is indeed true.celiac disease, as you may know, is a serious intolerance to gluten or wheat by the intestines and causes alot of debilitating symptoms to it's victims. when wheat is cut from the diet the condition can be eliminated.if you've ever known anyone who has suffered from this it's hard to imagine them surviving life in the nfl.GO CED! Pidge
The symptoms can vary from person to person I believe but yes, a major upheaval to one's daily life. The girl I knew who suffered from it went on to row for her Uni and county and win titles. Plus, I believe men respond better to the various treatments, including a gluten-free diet. But yeah, must be a hell of a hassle to juggle his nutritional requirements to stay in NFL shape with maintaining a substantial muscle mass etc. Luckily he/the Bengals can afford top sports nutritionists and dieticians to keep it in check. DC_Bengals_Fan
I've got it, actually. And lemme tell ya, it sucks a big fat donkey c*ck. Severity differs widely from person to person, as do the symptoms. In fact, often the problem is that none of the symptoms are severe or specific enough on their own to help in getting a diagnosis. I'm not surprised that he was able to play with it. The only issue I've noticed is that I tend to be more hypoglycemic than I used to be, so I needs my blood sugar.Diet shouldn't be a problem for him going forward as far as the NFL. You can't have wheat or barley, but rice and corn are OK as is anything meat related.I actually figured out what was wrong with me 3 years ago. For about 3 seconds, I figured the diet was no big deal. Then I realized I had to give up beer. Then I wept like a schoolgirl.

kenyon1977
So does this mean the Bengals will now have more dietitians on staff than scouts?

Giving up beer wasn't so much of a problem for her though. Sounds like, luckily, the symptoms for either of you weren't that severe.

For a while there, I had bones like an old lady. Believe me, anything less than that and I'd have put up with it so I could keep the beer. Now, though, I think everything's under control. Most times, if you get on the diet in time you're OK.
Pidge
Ugh, extra corners are never cool. Glad all is well now for you. So, have you found any palatable alternatives to beer? I know they have some gluten free muck beer available over here but it tastes like piss.

There's a couple others that taste somewhat better than urine. One of these days I'll try making my own. I like hoppy beers and they don't make those gluten-free.
