Game management

Hair made the comment early about the Saints game and I was going to post something as well, because even the TV analysts made a few commnets about why the Bengals were wasting so much time trying to get plays off. While I understand it's the preseason and you want to get things right, this should also be part of the game that is worked on during the preseason. The time management was bad and has been for some time. I like Marvin and want to see him stay actually, but he really needs to work on that issue.

As for which I would prefer in regards to the teams record, yeah give me the 8-8 to the 4-12 any year. While I understand neither is going to take us to the playoffs and I would indeed prefer that, if that's not possible, give me 8-8. While I can also understand that we've only had one playoff appearance during this decade, like the 90's, our record is already better than that of the 90's and we could lose every game this season and it would still be better. While none of it is something to be happy about or try to defend, this decade has in fact been better than the 90's if by nothing else than going by the record of the team during that time. Simply saying...

I watch sports to be entertained. It's not entertaining to watch an 0-6 team play a meaningless game. A 3-3 team playing to get into the playoffs is much more entertaining

I haven't bothered checking the game log but if I recall correctly the Bengals had just gotten a penalty and were so slow reacting to the new down and distance situation they couldn't get the following play called in time, forcing Lewis to burn a timeout. So while I agree the head coach ultimately deserves the final blame for any team failure that happens under his direction...the immediate blame most likely rests with Bratkowski, who has sometimes been quilty of being too slow to call a play, OR Palmer, who seemed to be shaking off rust all game long.

There it is. And just guessing, most of the past examples of poor clock management are related to a failure to quickly call a new play, and Marvin seems as pissed about it as anyone.

that was the point i was making earlier about the OC making the play calls. if the clock stops and we can't get the play in and a timeout is called. the blame is on the OC.

as for the ice the kicker timeout, i see the point you guys are making but it has worked and often so i don't think that's a horrible call.

the other point that was raised that i whole heartedly agree with is the rarity of having three timeouts late in the fourth quarter.

Do you ever remember a time where a coach called a TO to ice a kicker in the 4th qtr when there was still time left on the clock for his offense to drive to a final score? I never have and for good reason. The chances of icing the kicker are much less than the chance that you'll need that TO in order to get into FG position and win the game yourself.

I don't have a big problem in general with calling TOs to ice the kicker but I sure do when you're about to get the ball like the Bengals were

This what? What is that supposed to mean?

Not much to add but I thought I'd bump this one after seeing Hardknocks footage of Bratkowski, from the booth, loudly screaming about how long the offense was taking to run a play during the Saint game.

Agreed. I noted the same thing.

I wonder what the problem is here. If the call is getting in on time, why can't the offense get themselves organized?

Sounds like they need some more mock games or at least start practicing more game situations to help solve the obvious confusion that often plagues this offense when they are on the field.
