Bearcat1975
Translation:Smith Camp: If there is a holdout, it ain't OUR fault.Look for an article on bengals.com in the next day or two saying "Bengals Pulling Out All Stops To Get Smith Inked" or some other such nonsense. Kazkal
Well if their looking to pay him normal increase on Vernons contract I can't blame them because that would fair...Now if their gonna try & be cheap by saying he's a RT or if Smith is looking for sanchez type of contract then

Just thought you put a bad choice of words lol.I think it's plain stupid when they use the word thug and Andre Smith in the same sentence, calling someone a thug because they left the NFL combine early or being out of shape is just dumb to me. The word we should be using is immature, hopefully some of those veterans will get a hold of his phone number and put the heat on his butt, Carson and the boys should be putting in his ear to remember that the agents work for you and it's not the other way around. I don't think Andre will have a problem understanding that concept the way he has fired these agents.
ArmyBengal
I don't know why things written about Andre Smith would suprise anyone as being stupid, as most of the dumbest sh*t ever written about him has come form this very forum.I especially loved the constant posts about his boobs as if they have any relevance to his playing ability. Then there's the whole thought that he was suddenly a second round talent due to bad decisions made at the combine.Bottomline, as I made a post about him a while back is there are already parameters in place for his contract. Now you can "not like" what Sanchez got at #5 or "not like" what kind of an increase Gholston got at #6 last year, but "not liking" those deals doesn't somehow erase the fact the ceiling and bottom have been set. Hell, even if the Bengals front office don't like it, doesn't change it. I forget off the top what I posted he would get, but it was firmly inbetween those two deals and I don't expect it to be any less. You can bet your ass Smith's agent has the same line of thought. My question is, why does this suprise anyone ??Please refrain from giving me some load of sh*t about Smith was prone to holdout either. I mean ANY player the Bengals took at #6 was going to be in the same boat with the same contract parameters to start with right ?? Those numbers aren't going to change, only the incentives wanting to be placed in the deal. Mark my words...Oh yeah, Gholston's contract maxes out at around 33 million if he doesn't meet those incentives in his deal. I don't think A. Smith's deal will be much different in that aspect. Hell, even if the Bengals front office don't like it, doesn't change it.If that were the case, then every deal would be done by the day after the draft and there would never be any holdout. Thing is, there are different ways of interpreting the situation. Sanchez's deal *does* make it difficult because he got a QB deal, and they always get more than their slot commands. Like Matt Ryan did last year, for instance. So that does complicate the issue. It's also not the same number of years as the standard deal. That makes it much harder to compare the deals, which makes it tougher to slot him, which will complicate negotiations, etc. Please refrain from giving me some load of sh*t about Smith was prone to holdout either. I mean ANY player the Bengals took at #6 was going to be in the same boat with the same contract parameters to start with right ?? Those numbers aren't going to change, only the incentives wanting to be placed in the deal.Sorry, bud. It takes two to tango, and some agents are known for holding their clients out longer than others - that much is a fact. Keels is supposedly one of them. If he wants to hold his client out, he can, and there's nothing the Bengals can do. And since agents are not negotiating in their clients' best interest so much as advertising for next years' clients, he cares more about the terms of the deal than getting Smith in on time. Also, if he waits longer until deals are well slotted, he lowers the risk of looking bad. I think he'll wait until the #4 and #7 picks are signed, at least, since Sanchez is impossible to work off of as a comparison. There's also the switching *from* Keels for the duration of the draft process, and then back afterward. I don't think you need to be incredibly perceptive to see the motive there. So consider me one who is quite happy to 'give you a load of sh*t' on this one. I do believe Smith will probably be tougher to sign than your average pick in that spot, even given how tough that spot is already. Yes, any pick at #6 would be challenging, but it is quite possible to make a bad situation worse. Now, crazy as Smith is, he might throw a total curve ball, fire Keels, and negotiate a deal on his own, so nothing with this guy would totally surprise me. Now, crazy as Smith is, he might throw a total curve ball, fire Keels, and negotiate a deal on his own, so nothing with this guy would totally surprise me.Ok, I never said the Sanchez deal DIDN'T complicate things and I've already made posts saying that very thing. However, the fact he's a QB is beside the point in the fact that his deal FIRMLY presents the ceiling of Smith's deal, unless you are thinking Smith is going to make more than Sanchez (which I don't think you are) so there's one part of his slot. Gholston's deal, regardless of increase from the year prior FIRMLY presents the bootomline of Smith's deal, unless you are thinking Smith is going to make less than Gholston. While I'm sure they are interested in seeing what the OT drafted before him gets, it won't be less than what Sanchez got at #5, so I don't see the real issue with it. I'm of the line of thought that what is going to complicate matters further and actually be the cause of the holdout, will be the incentives and clauses the Bengals are sure to want to include. Once again, this is also in relation to Gholston's deal last year. Sure it could max out in the 50+ million range, but if he doesn't perform, he get's less than 35 million. I see the Bengals wanting something in that mold.In regards to your comment about Keels, you said it yourself, "supposedly". He may or may not be known for it, but it doesn't make this situation any different. All of the things you mention about Keels, can be applied to ANY agent out there and would then present the same challenge for any other player we would have drafted. I get what you are saying, but feel that entirely to much has been made of some of the admitted poor decisions on the part of Smith. Most, if not all, of the holdout talk is speculation and the same could be said of most high draft picks. No one here truly knows Smith or Keels, so we are guessing. I'm just not as concerned as much as some here seem to be.Then again, there are still people here that think his boobs are going to be his downfall as an offensive tackle in the NFL... ArmyBengal
Sounds like the parameters I was talking about right ?? Also talks about the incentives or triggers to make the money in the contract. Nothing real suprising by any account, but it was something worth noting when all else seems pretty slow at this point...BIG DEALS: The speculation is that the agent for No. 1 pick Andre Smith is going to start his negotiations just below Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's deal at No. 5 for $28.5 million guaranteed and that the Bengals are going to start at the $21 million guaranteed the Jets gave linebacker Vernon Gholston at No. 6 last year. But a lot of times these deals aren't even about the money. It's what the player has to do in order to trigger the guarantee. As in, how much does he have to play? In the past the Bengals and other teams have agreed to fairly easy triggers, such as 35 to 45 percent play time. For instance, Keith Rivers didn't hit that last year because of his broken jaw but he's expected to reach it this year. But with an unsigned CBA beyond 2010 and the economy of the league and country still up in the air, will teams want to protect themselves even more by making sure they get production for their millions? With Gholston on the verge of being declared a bust, are the Jets just sick over that $21 million? It may well turn out the most intriguing part of the deals in the top 10 aren't the money, but what they have to do to get the money. With the holiday completed, look for there to be some contact between the Bengals and agent Alvin Keels in the next week or so.http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/holding-fourth/c70f70df-bf63-4cd5-b910-fe666132d345
