DesperateDerelict
The second the Bengals selected Michael Johnson, you had to imagine what our third down package would have to look like. I can see the Bengals moving Geathers inside to team with Tank Johnson or Pat Sims. And Odom and Johnson on the outsides. Or Geathers and Johnson on the outside, with Odom and Sims on the Inside. Sims was very good last year at the snap and getting into the backfield and causing some chaos, so you gotta figure with two guys over 6'5 on the field coming from the inside and the outside should help the pass rush and secondary reaction time.Since Zimmer has had the most success in a 3-4, I see the Bengals occasionally going with 3 quick UT guys (Peko-T.Johnson-Sims) with Geathers / M.Johnson to the left and / or Odoms / M.johnson to the right. Rey will have to sit this one out, 'cause you've got Rivers on the weakside - right and B.Johnson or D.Jones strong / left.Beef up front, speed outrside, and no way to tell where the rush is coming from. ArmyBengal
If we want to say #21 against the run is decent, I'll go ahead and disagree now... That has been a glaring weakness of this team forever and a day. I do think it got better as the year progressed with moving Sims into the starting position, but by the time that happened, we were already through the toughest part of the schedule and things got real easy down the stretch as far as level of competition. While I love what the draft brought us, I'm just not sold on this defense being a true top 10 unit. Maybe the new guys will put us over the hump, but it has to be a concerted effort. I'm sick of seeing our stats say we are great against the pass when teams know they can run it down our throat. I'm sick of seeing our stats say we are better against the run when teams know they can put it up top against us.I think those stats can be very deceiving and it's why I'm not overjoyed with our final #12 ranking.Hunt was also projected as a 7th round pick at best that most figured would be a practice squad player, so I'm doubting we will be paying for it at all. Then again, the Browns do need LB help, so anything is possible. I'm just thinking less likely...
HAPPYJAQ
I think Lucky has a real chance to make the team, but the injury bug has bitten him again, which is part of the reason he went undrafted in the first place. Call me crazy, but I think that Cosby will ending up winning the #6 spot at WR, due to his return potential. He might end up being a KR/PR, in the Skyler Green mold. The guy is just a football player who put up some huge numbers for a big-time program at Texas. It makes perfect sense and is a double bonus if he can give the Bengals something in the slot next season. The only question would be, who sits on gameday between Simpson and Henry, if the Bengals dress their normal five WRs? Brown could surprise as well and Urrutia and Purify should be improved, after spending all of last season on the practice squad. This might be the deepest I can remember a Bengals WR corp, 1 through 9, including Antonio Chatman.
whizzo
lucky tweaked his hamstring again, yeah. shame. can we bring back russell? a backfield consisting of benson, russell and scott next year would do just fine i think.

You would think the Bengals would've at least waited to see him in camp. The fact he was cut twice in two weeks tells me there's something more to his story. whizzo
that's what i was thinking too. if the Steelers suddenly release him, and the Bengals release him after just one week, there has to be some underlying issue/problem.

I like seeing him getting a good look here, but still see a ton of talent in some of the other guys as well. It's hard to believe with the additional UDFA WR's we brought in that we currently have 11 WR's on the roster.I said it before in another thread and that is we are going to be putting some talented players on the practice squad. They won't last either... With the talent and numbers we have, somebody has to step up. Give him up for a 4th and move on to next season with no distractions. Carson Palmer will be throwing the football next season and if he doesn't, we're screwed anyway.

This is why I am so glad the bengals are aggressively trying to upgrade their personnel on defense. In 2001, the Bengals' defense was ranked 9th. In 2002, with the same starting cast, the Bengals' defense was a catastrophe.

ArmyBengal
As in many posts concerning the new guys, we HOPE this is the most talented defense we've had in many years.Would it really suprise anyone if we finished below #15 in total defense this season ?? Not me in the least...

Not me in the least...Not me, either. The good news is that we're bringing a lot of the same starters back from the end of the season and I'm thinking guys like Odom, Geathers and Rivers will be improved in their second season under Zimmer. The downside is that with more blitzing as advertised by Zimmer, we'll likely give up more big plays. I'll take a dip in the rankings if it means forcing more turnovers, though.
