Rumor Central: Casey Hampton

Recommended Posts

A guy at work, who happens to be a die-hard Steelers fan, with his Gold Chain and Steelers Charm encrusted with 5 or 6 diamonds, one representing each Super Bowl victory, tells me that Casey Hampton was overweight and out of shape when arriving to camp. He said that Casey couldn't run the 100 yard sprints that the Steelers run at the beggining of camp. He said that Mike Tomlin had a gopher get all of Casey Hamptons stuff from his room and bring it out to the field. Tomlin tells Hampton to run the sprints or get the f**k out of camp! He was sent home.

We're not talking about an average player here, this is a Pro-Bowler. And here the Bengals are with a player who has the abilitly to become a Pro-Bowler in Jeremi Johnson, but where is he? He's on the sidelines running laps because he's overweight... Marvin should take a few pages out of Tomlins book... The Bengals will never be as great as the Steelers if we keep this type of attitude. This is the type of attitude that seperates winners from losers and I just do not see the Bengals ever taking this approach... We may win a lot of games because we're talented and have a lot of very good players on this team but we are FAR from great.

I dont see how that helps either side out. If you send the overweight guy back to the place he became out of shape in, there is a good chance he will never get back to playing weight. If you keep the guy around and make him workout and keep reminding him that if he does not get it together he is out the door, it seems more likely that he might get his s#&t together. I hope Hampton stays fat this year and gets released, maybe the Bengals could sign him, motivate him and kick the Stealers butts with him on the team.

My initial thought exactly! I would take Hampton in a milli-second... But the point is that the Steelers don't put up with any BS. It's a privilage to play on their team. If you don't meet the expectations, hit the road jack!

Now you may think that I'm completely contradicting myself by saying this because of all my rants on Chris Henry and Odell Thurman and how I always had their backs... That's different because all that stuff was off the field stuff which doesn't concern me. I felt like they could turn away from their past and learn from their mistakes. I was obvioulsly wrong about that... But in this case (JJ), it's directly related to an on-field problem. If Jeremi Johnson can't get his fat ass in shape, make the son-of-a-bitch run sprints or get the f**k out of town... Just sayin.

It is my understanding that JJ has been in a team related workout regimen since he arrived overweight. If this is not the case than he might as well be sent home now.

I'm sure he is. I read in an article posted here that he was spotted at camp running laps.
