jjakq27 Posted July 25, 2007 Report Share Posted July 25, 2007 Nice article.It's a shame that the public at large and the media thinks that Bill Walsh developed the West Coast offense when he went to SF. I guess winning three Super Bowls will do that for you. He admitted that he learned a lot from Paul Brown while here in Cincinnati and also from Sid Gillman when he was an assistant in SD in the early 60's. And this offense truly was developed out of necessity since they were an expansion team, Cook was injured and their O-line wasn't the greatest so the QB needed to get rid of the ball right away.I read a story a few years back that said Walsh used to make Dan Fouts (at SD) and Montana (SF) watch films of Kenny Anderson when he was teaching them his offense. But Virg Carter was the guinea pig for what became the West Coast Offense. I am sure Anderson learned from him as he became the regular QB here too.
