Swilling56
For anyone coming down to visit us in the great city of New Orleans I wanted to give y'all a few notes on some fun things to do.Assuming you're coming on Friday you'll definitely want to hit up the quarter on Friday night. I know it's tops on the list. My suggestion is to go to Acme Oyster House for dinner. It's right off Bourbon street on Iberville (one street in from Canal street). Even if you're not into oysters you can get some great po-boys (that's what we call subs), jumbalaya, and a host of other great eats. Try a pitcher of Abita beer - that's our local brewery. The Amber is solid, and they usually have a seasonal. I like their Wheat myself. Then go to Pat O'Brien's. It's on St. Peter's street right off Bourbon - about 5 blocks from Acme. Go inside to the open patio (it's warm enough down here to drink outside - always is). It's a nice little oasis off the craziness of Bourbon. You'll have to try a hurricane - this is where it started. I think they're too sweet - I like the cyclones. After a few of those the rest of your night will be a hazy fun memory.Saturday i'm assuming after waking up and having a horrible hangover you'll want to see the Mich O State game. Go to Cooter Brown's. It's on St. Charles and Carrolton. Tons of TV’s, about 50 or so beers on tap, and I think in the neighborhood of 250 bottles. Get the Gator Philly – gator meat – the other white meat (it’s really good). At night you have a few options. I would suggest checking out the Big Easy Rollergirls (www.bigeasyrollergirls.com). It’s New Orleans all-female flat track roller derby league. Not wrestling style – it’s real hard-hitting action. The bouts are tons of fun and they are hosted at Mardi Gras World with the backdrop of some of the most famous mardi gras floats. You can get tickets online. If you decide this isn’t for you, then I’d suggest checking out some of the uptown bars to get more of a feel for the other New Orleans. Dos Jefes (Tchoupitoulas and Octavia Streets) is a great cigar bar usually with great live local music. Nobody you’ve hear of before, but always great. Now, as for Sunday… well, I’ll just say this. I hope y’all have a fantastic, incredible weekend with only 3 lousy hours in it. Let’s hope for a great, entertaining game, with most of all no injuries.I’ll check back every now and then when I can, so if anyone has any questions feel free to post it here and if I can get back I’ll try to answer all of them.Last but not least, please tip well. Remember that the money you spend down here will be going a long way towards helping our great city rebuild, and almost all the tips will be helping people in various stages of rebuilding their homes. There’s a lot to do here, and it’s almost all in the residential neighborhoods as all the great, tourist places are part of the old areas of the city that were originally built on high ground (the 15% or so that did not flood). As the city grew and more space was used for residential parts homes were built on lower ground. Thanks again for coming down, partying with us, and supporting our home.
