AGrizzlyBaer
Sources: Merriman To Be SuspendedChargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has been notified he will be suspended for four games for violating the NFL's steroids policy, league and team sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.makes the chargers a little weaker when they play us
Pinkygen
Good news for us, that San Diego defense is tough. (Despite what KC did to them today). According to ESPN, it definetly was steroids, and not a supplement mistake.
Kazkal
Chargers have taken our bad character title i think.I thought he was overrated last year but this year was thinking damn it would be nice to have him! but i'm glad we don't now lol
skyline
Sucks for the Chargers. I won't gloat...this hits a little too close to home for Cincy fans.
AGrizzlyBaer
man its kinda like us...how many players can you lose and still be competitive? what makes it worse for them is they have a first year starter going too... Kazkal
I feel bad for the fans but not him
CBin2k7
That sucks for the Chargers, but without Merriman and Shawne Phillips, they have no pass rush. Carson should have a field day on their secondary when the Bengals play them.
derekshank
Sounds exactly like our LB situation. Although we didn't lose anyone as explosive as Merriman. He was quickly becoming one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. Now we know why.It seems like a lot of the AFC Wild-Card competition is falling off fast. There's no one in the east. Jacksonville lost to Houston. Pittsburgh can't beat anyone. KC is Jekyll and Hyde. SD lost to KC, and now this. It's quickly looking like there's more than enough room for 2 playoff spots coming from the AFC North.
Edogger
I heard this on ESPN and my jaw dropped. It also answered the questions below...1. He played so "lights out" all the time2. Wow, other teams really do deal with some of the same problems as Cincy, just not as large of doses.
rwalling
Anyone else find the potential (former bengal) Steve Foley ties a little ironic given his alleged steroid issues within the SD LB corps?
JaxonFord87
Sucks to hear this, becuase he was a fantastic player. But all the easier to beat SD I guess.
agreen_112
It's amazing how most people find this shocking that Merriman uses steriods. Steriods are all over professional sports. I don't understand why people can't see this. College sports are really bad too. A friend of mine who went to Tiffin said that He and the other LB's used steriods along with the FB, Safety and a few lineman. I mean look at Merriman, the dude is cock diesel, it's not hard to tell that he's been taking something...

It's close. Odell is suspended for longer than Merriman, but I think Foley way makes up for it. Cheech has nothing on him. If we hadn't drafted Rucker they'd have the title in the clear. Are there any Chargers with sexual assault problems?
BengalChamps
This doesnt surprise me. It angers me. Steroids = Cheating. It puts pressure on those who try to play by the rules. It pressures young kids to put this in their body so that they can be on an equal playing field. I'M NOT SURE THAT 4 GAMES IS ENOUGH! Kazkal
2. Wow, other teams really do deal with some of the same problems as Cincy, just not as large of doses.Chargers are right up there us in number of doses actually worse IMO because most of their crap happened durring the season. mean look at Merriman, the dude is cock diesel, it's not hard to tell that he's been taking something...People can get like that without them its matter working your ass off 24/7 or taking a easy way
Dan2330
San Diego pretty close to San Fransico... maybe Bonds is pimping him out too...

I saw it in college (roomed with a football player, and hung out with many). I am thoroughly convinced that, regardless of 'testing policies', it is throughout professional sports. Baseball just gets to be the lucky posterboy. You either accept that it is everywhere, and, as a fan, deal with it ... or ... hate the sports as well as the players. I see no stopping this. If it bothers someone to accept the truth of it, I am not sure what to tell that person. Is what it is.
Kazkal
he took a supplement that it diden't list what ever he tested postive for

My dad was a bodybuilder and used testoterone supplements for many years. You would be surprised to find out that performance enhancement drugs are very common in sports. It's just like anything else, some get caught and some don't, imagine how many are getting away with it. Merriman's case though has taken a turn and it looks like he may get around the 4 gamer. If it is true that the supplement didn't include on the label the ingredient that he tested possitive for then he'll walk...
duus
Hold the phone on this one. I just read that his appeal will not be heard until early November, so he will definitely play in the next 2 games. They also mentioned that if the ruling is not made quickly, he may play beyond that ... meaning in the following game in Cincinnati. Looking like he will play against us afterall. agreen_112
Yeah He'll get to play, but if they do suspend him for 4 games, which I don't think they will, he may be out around the end of the season.

Tasher
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2644175Pasqarelli reports that Merriman drops appeal will begin suspension this week...He will miss Browns, Bengals, Broncos, Raiders....San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman plans to drop his appeal and serve a four-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance, The New York Times reported Tuesday. The Times reported that a deal between Merriman's lawyer and the NFL was being worked out Monday night. According to a person briefed on the discussions, the deal would allow Merriman to appear at team headquarters on Wednesday to address his teammates, the newspaper said. Normally, a suspended NFL player is barred from his team's facilities. The Times reported that if Merriman does not drop the appeal by noon Tuesday, he must proceed with the appeal, scheduled to be heard Nov. 7. "I don't know what is going to happen yet and someone has already said I'm thinking about dropping the appeal and what not, but I still have to find out what is going on myself," Merriman told reporters on Monday. "I haven't decided anything yet. I'll find out sometime today [Monday] or tomorrow [Tuesday] what I am going to do, if I am going to do anything at all. It's just all part of the process." Since his appeal is set for Nov. 7, Merriman was able to play Sunday against the St. Louis Rams and would get to play in this Sunday's home game against the Cleveland Browns, unless he decides to drop it.Merriman said the positive drug test stems from a tainted supplement, and not many people give him a chance of avoiding a four-game suspension. If he dropped his appeal, Merriman would miss the Chargers' next four games, against the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders. He would be eligible return against the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 3. Asked if his heel injury would affect his decision, he said with a wink: "Yeah, my heel is hurt so bad I think I will probably be out three-to-four weeks."Then he added: "No, my heel is fine. I'm just trying to stay off it a little bit today.""I just want to stay on the field. That is all I'm considering right now," said Merriman, the 2005 Defensive Rookie of the Year who has a team-high 8½ sacks. "Obviously I want to be back as soon as possible if anything is going to happen at all. But assuming that something might happen, I have to do what's best to get back on the field as soon as possible."Merriman said he'd feel cheated if he didn't get to state his case. "But at the same time its not about me proving a point or proving anything anymore. It's about me playing football."
