Ahmed Brooks future starter.

MLB Ahmad Brooks, No. 46: Remember how head coach Marvin Lewis was supposedly against taking Brooks last month in the third round of the supplemental draft? It sure didn’t sound that way on Wednesday as he raved about the kid’s athletic ability.

The 6-3, 258-pound Brooks has impressed everyone with his size and speed and now it’s a race against the clock in how he picks it up mentally. He’s going to be a starter, but when and at what linebacker spot? Probably not this season but first, let’s see how far away he is during the season.

The coaches want to see him play with his pads lower and react quicker to his keys so he can exploit his downhill violence. Linebackers coach Ricky Hunley has been screaming at him all week to watch the fullback, and they don’t want to see as many running lanes open as have been this week with all the backers.

“He looks good. He’s a big boy. Big,” said starting middle linebacker Brian Simmons.

But you’re just looking at Brooks for fun. He’s already made the club, right, along with the starting trio of Simmons, David Pollack, and Landon Johnson. The team will want to keep seven backers and Odell Thurman starts out on the suspended list. So you’ve got veterans Marcus Wilkins, Hannibal Navies and Caleb Miller, CFL veteran Rashad Jeanty as well as rookie A.J. Nicholson, for those three spots.

The guy who really is eyeballing the linebackers is special teams coach Darrin Simmons. Teams is going to decide those three spots, and somebody is going to have to sandblast Wilkins off this roster after two seasons he has been one of Simmons’s aces in all phases.

“From what I can see,” Simmons said, “we’ve got a lot of young guys competing against old guys, guys who have been here with us for awhile and (the young) are going to have to unseat them.”

ya im stoked about him. simmons might be back on the outside with brooks in the middle by the end of the season...

simmons, brooks, pollack....could be very deadly. makes my mouth water....

anyone notice about that article that hobson completely disregarded Reggie McNeal? hobson didnt list him as a top 6 to make the roster at WR. guess the practice squad...he'll prolly get snatched up.
