ArmyBengal
Geathers wasn't used as a DE on passing downs last year, he was moved inside as a DT. Maybe with Beer Belly in the middle, he will be used like he was his rookie year, and manage to have a good season. TNBT, don't bother, we've made the same comment numerous times in this thread and people are just hellbent on saying Geathers need to be replaced. I to, think he will have a better year pushed back out to the edge...WHODEY !!!
derekshank
I also think Geathers will have a better year... but we are still lacking depth. After Geathers and Smith, we have an unproven Fanene... and then you'd have to use Thornton or Robinson. That wouldn't be the end of the world... but neither of those guys are goign to light the world on fire as far as a pass rush goes.I'd like to have a better pass rushing DE, so when Justin's contract is up, we aren't forced to break the bank on him... because he's not the only guy who's going to be a FA next year... so someone's going to have to go.Hair... I agree with you. I think Smith is a very good DE... but I'd prefer to draft a DE and let him go if it means choosing between him and keeping the O-Line together. schweinhart
Jumpy looks like the future at LDE if Justin splits after this year. A DE early would give a good prospect to develop over a year and have ready in the event this happens. But in the short term a DE who can get to the passer and be ready to keep contain against cutback lanes and stretch runs -- especially on the normal weakside where Jumpy really struggles to react -- should improve the defense vs. run and pass.Pollack already serves this purpose to some degree and may find himself there more this year or next. But I would like to see another Pollack type who could also play LB on the strong side and provide more speed rush in 4-3 sets as well as give the Bengals further flexibility of alignment in their 3-man fronts vs. pass, which could happen more this year than last. I to, think he will have a better year pushed back out to the edge...WHODEY !!!This is exactly why the Bengals should consider DTs like John McCargo and Claude Wroten. Get some penetration off the pass rush at RDT already. Jumpy is steady at it but just not disruptive enough IMO to warrant the coninued use of him in that way. Thornton isn't the answer there either in pass situations. The Bengals still need to upgrade pass rush DT, even with Big Sam signed.
ArmyBengal
Another DT is a must in my mind as well. Big Sam will be an upgrade, but he's older and anything else is either not that good or still unproven.WHODEY !!!
skyline
It's hard to deny the guy's talent. He had a rough year last year, but it happens. A position change, plus playing every down for the first time make a difference. Can't wait to see what he does this year
Spor_tees
Don't forget we brought in the youngster from the CFL in Jeanty to be a Special Teamer and an off the end quick pass rusher. The guy wasn't in the CFL because he wasn't good enough for the NFL either...it was just because he wasn't old enough to enter the draft yet when he left college. (Just to clear that up before someone stated the obvious) If he would have been available for the draft he was projected late 2nd to 3rd round. His only downside was his lack of size, which with the strength coaches the Bengals have, can be fixed easily! Maybe the Bengals will have their own version of Osi Umenyiora this year. I like this guy to and have mentioned him from time to time, but most think he's nothing but camp fodder. He played more than solid in the CFL and has experience and youth. I'm hoping for good things, lets hope they pan out !!!WHODEY !!!
schweinhart
It'll be interesting to see what happens with Jeanty. He might fit at least the edge rush part of the equation. But until he hefts up, hard to imagine him choring inside vs. run where better results would seem likelier to come from Pollack and another player closer to his build and skill set.I hope the Bengals got a deal in Jeanty but wouldn't be surprised if he turned out more like a Poor Man's Larry Stevens than another Osi Humanurine. derekshank
I just looked it up... and Jeanty is small at 230 lbs... but he would only have to gain 5 lbs to be the exact same size as the NFL's sack leader Robert Mathis with the Colts. He is only 6'3" 235 lbs. I say, if he puts on 15 lbs, and is really quick, he could defintely play the position part time (like Mathis does). I'd be okay with that on passing downs... assuming he's effective.
HairOnFire
Hair... I agree with you. I think Smith is a very good DE... but I'd prefer to draft a DE and let him go if it means choosing between him and keeping the O-Line together. Here's my dirty little secret. Justin Smith is one of my favorite Bengal players. Damn, it feels good to say that out loud. However, it's pretty obvious the Bengals will have a big decision to make in regards to Smith as I think he'll command more FA money than they may be willing to pay. And depending on the numbers being kicked around I just might agree with the decision to let him go without a fight. But if the Bengals are already leaning towards a future without Smith then they'd be well served to address the DE position this year AND next, because I don't look forward to watching a Bengal defense that lacks a single proven DE on it's roster. BTW, I've always believed that one of the reasons Smith bashers can have their fun without looking like complete idiots is due to the fact that Smith's incredible durability has meant none of us has had to witness what the Bengals front would look like without him. TecmoFever
After reading this thread, I am now convinced that we need a DE 1st round if a good one is available. I've switched from safety to DT to TE so far during Free Agency, but Derek and Hair have convinced me that we definitely need a DE. Also, I don't think that many would argue that Justin Smith has been solid over the years without any help on the line. Geathers has the chance to be a nice pass rusher, and it would be crazy to give up on him just yet.
ArmyBengal
There are a lot of DE's I wouldn't mind seeing in the 1st and if any of them are there, we probably take one versus Cromartie who is now my favorite pick at #24... Kiwi, Hali are the two I'm talking about...WHODEY !!!
