Offensive Line Draft Talk Thread

Recommended Posts

Yeah I don't know, what I do know is Mike Brown, and he'll want to replace AJ.  The "smart" pick is Sewell if he's there,  Jonah has a pretty serious injury history already, Kief is 32.   But how do you justify paying a 3rd OT that kind of dough, and then not start him for a year or two possibly? Move him to RG? Think MB would pay for that?  I don't.

The pick - at the moment, as FA stands - has to be a OL.

This is true whether they take Sewell or Slater at 5, or another player a bit later if they trade down, which remains my preference

For me, it goes further than that - as I see it, they need all 3 day 1 and day 2 picks to be linemen, albeit 1 of the day 2 picks could be a DL

They were supposed to use FA to set up the draft so they could go BPA, but they absolutely shit the bed in this regard...it has to be OL now

This could change tomorrow if they sign (or trade for - Havenstein is still my favorite) a decent FA OL or two, but I see no signs of that happening

Because pissing off TJ is ALWAYS job 1! ;)

TJ is going to be a very unhappy man.  I'm  just predicting what I think they will do, based on what's happened so far and their history, not what I want them to do necessarily.

Anyone heard anything about Huber? Seems weird they haven’t resigned him. Nothing recent indicated he’s declining and he’s been a solid guy for a long time. If they’re moving on, ok I guess, but seems odd to create a question where there is none.

I've been asking about Huber on twitter as well

dead silence

about the pick -- yeah, I know SoaG loves his bright and shiny toys, but he's got to be talked out of it, because he likes franchise quarterbacks even more and he will lose New Guy again if he doesnt protect him......

as such, the pick must be an OL

New Guy is classy and professional.  He probably wont pull a Russell Wilson or a Deshaun Watson or a Carson Palmer, at least not right away.  But you can bet that if they dont protect him he will be in their offices and in their faces -- in utter privacy -- demanding protection.  Especially after what he went through, and rightfully so

I like Chase.  I like Pitts.

But damage to my home appliances will occur if one of them is chosen UNLESS some OLs are signed or traded for

I think Sewell has all-time great written all over him, so he's just a clear best pick available to me. Reiff was signed to a one-year deal, so that's not a long-term solution to anything, at least not yet.

If Sewell and Chase are both there, I have a feeling they'll take Chase. I'm going to bite my fist and try to be excited about it, because I do think Chase is a fabulous prospect. I just don't think that's the best formula for winning a Super Bowl. If Sewell is gone at 5 and Chase is there, then sure do whatever you want Bengals.

Cincy Jungle has published an "NFL Insider" take on the first round suggest the Bengals can get Sewell in a trade down at number 8.    Which is a big disconnect to the media published mock drafts that have him locked in at 5 to the Bengals.

This is a scenario with media drafts I have pointed out.  The major factor locking in Sewell in as a top 5 prospect was the Bengals need of offensive line.

Sewell is likely to fall (not out of top 10) IF the Bengals don't draft him at 5.   I don't think its realistic to think he goes before 5.   I guess it could happen but I view it as unlikely.

I also don't think its likely Chase makes it to 5.   The insider suggests or the writer suggests Pitts and Smith could go before Chase and Sewell.

I think if Chase is there at 5 he's your pick.   They have lost 3 WR bodies during FA and haven't replaced one yet.

Tyler Dragon on the latest Pod the Enq folks do said reading between the lines, he thinks the Bengals are locking in on WR at #5 - Chase and Smith in that order. fwiw.

Unless there is a massive run on OL in R1, which  is quite possible, top of R2 could be ripe with OL talent. We’ll see how evaluations morph over the next month and the NFL norms around the picks.

Tons of options in this draft for oline, you do not have to spend a first round pick to get good starting caliber players.  Take the best player on your board at #5.  If that is Sewell, great.  If that is Chase or Pitts, awesome.  If that is Devonta Smith uh....serious concerns there about durability.

Sewell's ceiling is higher than any WR out there.  He could play year 1, how well remains to be seen.  But if he develops the physical potential he exhibited in college, he could be a top ten all-time offensive tackle.

And there is no dispute - we badly need an offensive tackle.

Sewell has to be the pick if he is there.  Chase is a beast, but we've got two very good receivers right now around who we can build into this season with more depth type guys.  At tackle, we don't have two very good players.  We don't have jack shit unless you want to count Reilly who is on a one year deal and is already 32 and is about to play his tenth season.  Great mentor, great stop gap, great a lot of things.  But there is no way I'd use his presence to move off of a guy at a position of great need who could play 12 or 13 years at a high level.

I'm not discounting Jonah Williams and his potential contribution.  He's a player, and he's decent.  That's all he is.  He missed all 16 games his rookie year due to his torn labrum.  He missed two games in the middle of last season with his neck injury.  Then in week 13 remember he got carted off the field with that knee injury, and missed the rest of the season.  He's ended both of his seasons with us on IR.    By my calculation he's played in 11 games out of a possible 32 games.

If he's there, we absolutely must grab Penei Sewell.

Bengals are down 3 WRs.    The group they have now has 2 good WRs that don't dictate cover on their own.

Message board warriors can go back and forth all day.   Based from what I've read the WR class is better a the top than tackle and OL is deeper at 38.

I am here now,  to prepare you all, that the Bengals are probably going WR at #5 overall.

And, full disclosure, I am here for it.

Also, hoosier, why should Smith do drills at his pro day? His tape speaks volumes.

Well, why should anyone do drills then? Why even have pro days? Mike Brown would certainly agree, would save a bundle on the travel budget and once you’ve watched the tape, you can erase it and re-use it again next year! That newfangled vee see are technology is really something!

Here the thing

SoaG does indeed like his bright and shiny toys......receivers and running backs

but he does like one thing even more

Quarterbacks

If anyone with a lick of sense - and I doubt there is much of this amongst the entire FO, based on what we've seen thus far - can remind him of this, he may settle down and agree with the choice to take Sewell rather than Chase....to protect his bigger, more important, more beloved asset

So I will be angry but unsurprised if it is Chase or Pitts or <any non-OL>....even though I really like Chase and Pitts

To get me angry AND surprised, it'd be any defensive player or any offensive player not named above

Let me also add - I am still riding the tradedown train.  Much rather have Darrisaw or Slater plus an additional 2-4 day 2 picks than any of Sewell, Chase, or Pitts

Most of the top 10 prospects skip out on some or all of the pro day events. Often, in years w/ Indy combine events, they skip those too. There's nothing new about Smith not working at Pro Day.

Since this is turning into more of a draft thread, I will drop this thought here...

Showing my work further:

Sewell
Slater
Vera-Tucker
Cosmi
Darrisaw
Jenkins
Leatherwood
Eichenberg
Mayfield
Little
Radunz

We pick 38th. There is NO WAY that 11 tackles will be gone before we pick in the second round. The 11 I have listed all have 1st or 2nd round grades on PFF.

Here's the WR list from PFF w/ 1st or 2nd round grades

Chase
Waddle
Smith
Bateman
Rondale Moore
Elijah Moore
Toney
Marshall Jr.
Brown

Once you get past Chase/Smith, IMO, there is a pretty huge dropoff at WR.

ymmv. But I would rather grab Chase/Smith (or Pitts) at 5 and then happily take what is there at T (or Davis / Dickenson at G) at 38 than the other way around.

I would actually place Waddle ahead of Smith.  Waddle is going to run sub 4.3 at his proday.

Yep...the question you have to ask yourself is....would you rather have Ja'Marr Chase and Sam Cosmi or Penei Sewell and Terrance Marshall Jr.  Rashawn Slater and Elijah Moore or Kyle Pitts and Alex Leatherwood?

That is indeed the question I have been asking myself since mid-January...

The answer I keep coming back to is as I have been advocating for in these parts since then too. It's Chase (and, in my case Smith altho I know you disagree) or Pitts in 1 and then line in 2.

If the OL is relegated to r2, then the r3 pick needs to be OL as well

One should be OT, the other should be IOL and preferably a guy who can play both OG and OC, like Creed Humphrey

I see Dickerson as too much of an injury risk to be the latter of those two picks

r4 should then be DL, preferrably a pass rushing specialist DE

trade down would make this a whole lot easier....and imo, better results

so this is a photo from a story about rioting in Miami Beach right now

but my head is so wrapped around football that what I saw was a Dolphins DL assistant coaching a rushing DE on how to beat the double teaming OLs

I am in a sad, sad state
