	Nothing like some Bengals draft talk in October, right?
</p>

<p>
	Ryan Wilson at cbs hits us with his second mock of the season (Halloween?).
</p>

<p>
	<a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/wilsons-2026-nfl-mock-draft-2-0-qb-class-runs-deep-but-theres-no-burrow-lawrence-or-williams-in-sight/" rel="external nofollow">https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/wilsons-2026-nfl-mock-draft-2-0-qb-class-runs-deep-but-theres-no-burrow-lawrence-or-williams-in-sight/</a>
</p>

<p>
	With the second overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select Rueben Bain Jr., Edge, Miami (Fla).
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents">

			Rueben Bain Jr. is an explosive, violent edge rusher with rare power and bend, capable of turning the corner from wide alignments and overwhelming tackles with speed-to-power. He wins with a deep arsenal of pass-rush moves -- from bull rushes to inside counters -- and plays with exceptional contact balance and hand usage to shed blocks both as a rusher and run defender. Relentlessly disruptive and highly explosive off the snap, Bain consistently collapses pockets, sets a firm edge and makes impact plays from whistle to whistle.
		</p>

</blockquote>

<p>
	So the third first round DE in four years. Sounds about right. Maybe third time is the charm.
</p>

<p>
	If they do pick this high, I think I would prefer a trade down. But we’ll see.

	<u><strong>FA: </strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	a legit 2IDT or NT. a monster run stopper. Willing to mentor a rookie.  Some pass rush ability would be a huge plus
</p>

<p>
	a DJ Reader clone would be superb
</p>

<p>
	got to have this guy.
</p>

<p>
	absolute must-have uber alles
</p>

<p>
	get him identified and all the contract details worked out in the legal tampering period
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<u><strong>DRAFT:</strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	Picks 1 through 4 in no particular order
</p>

<p>
	a legit 2IDT or NT to be groomed by the veteran free agent
</p>

<p>
	ORG or OLT (to replace veterans with expiring contracts)
</p>

<p>
	Pass rushing DE.  Some run stopping ability would be a huge plus.
</p>

<p>
	A LB who can cover and tackle.  Premium on sure tackling.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<u><strong>OTHER:</strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	I'd like to see a genuine star PR/KR.   Could be a DB, RB, or WR.
</p>

<p>
	I think we have our OC of the future in Matt Lee, although I'd be a lot happier if he bulks up to 315 or so before next season starts
</p>

<p>
	I also believe we have our new starter at TE for 2025 in Erick All
</p>

<p>
	The 2024 class is shaping up into one of the best draft classes we've ever had:
</p>

<p>
	--Mims is a quality starter at ORT.  Just pray he can stay healthy
</p>

<p>
	--Jenkins had the tackle on the 4th and goal
</p>

<p>
	--Burton looks like a star in the making
</p>

<p>
	--All is already starter+ quality as a blocker and added 4 catches on 4 targets. 100%.  I am all but certain that at least 2 of the catches were for first down
</p>

<p>
	--Daijahn had the fake punt pass breakup vs the Panthers
</p>

<p>
	--Lee hasnt been on the field and probably wont unless Karras is injured, but was wonderful in the preseason and looks every bit the part of the heir apparent we will need when Karras leaves
</p>

<p>
	Thats quite a bit for a draft class, especially this early
</p>

	Practice is Jan 30 - Feb. 1, game is Feb. 3. Some changes this year, most notably that it's not really the "senior" bowl anymore.

<p>
	There are 15 underclassmen participating so far. Notably given conversations elsewhere on the board, five are safeties: Georgia's Javon Bullard, Miami's Kamren Kinchens, Washington State's Jaden Hicks and the Utah duo of Sione Vaki and Cole Bishop.
</p>

<p>
	Looks like loads of good DBs and WRs overall so that should be fun. Also lots of quality OT/OL.

	Oh, hey, yeah, this thing got going yesterday…some stuff from ESPN:
</p>

<p>
	Biggest takeaways from day 1 practice was mostly about the QBs but there was this:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">

	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents">
		<p>
			One group that did stand out was the tight ends. I wrote about this group last week in our Senior Bowl primer, and what we saw on Day 1 was spot on with expectations. Oregon State's Luke Musgrave was the best all-around tight end here, but Clemson's Davis Allen also showed good hands and body control over the middle. The same goes for Cincinnati's Josh Whyle, who some teams view as a potential fullback in the pros. -- Matt Miller
		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Standouts:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents">
		<p>
			Keion White, DE, Georgia Tech
		</p>

		<p>
			Sometimes a player can win their group or practice session with a strong eyeball test and a few moves. On Tuesday, that was White. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound pass-rusher has excellent power on tape, and that lower-body strength showed up in practice. At one point, he executed a perfect spin move in offense vs. defense 11-on-11s, displaying agility, balance and a great bull rush coming off of it.
		</p>

		<p>
			I admit I was late to come around on White, but more than half a dozen of the scouts I polled at the Senior Bowl say he's the top-ranked prospect in Mobile this week. The buzz around White is that he'll be a first-round pick, with one scout for a playoff team even wondering if he'd still be available when it selects in the later parts of Round 1. White had 7.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss in 2022.
		</p>

		<p>
			Derick Hall, DE, Auburn
		</p>

		<p>
			Hall started the week on a good note, measuring in with 34 3/8 inch arm length on a 6-foot-3 and 252-pound frame. Those are great numbers considering one of his biggest questions heading into the pre-draft process was regarding his size. And then in the practice session, Hall routinely showed up when rushing from a stand-up position, something that should excite teams with base 3-4 defenses. He also turned in a GPS-measured speed of 19.21 miles per hour on a punt coverage, via Zebra Sports.
		</p>

		<p>
			Hall does need to develop a counter pass-rush move -- we saw him trying to use a rip-and-under move too often on Tuesday -- but his power and use of length are exciting tools. He posted seven sacks and 13 tackles for loss this season, and teams I've talked to this week believe he is a top-40 prospect.
		</p>

		<p>
			Michael Wilson, WR, Stanford
		</p>

		<p>
			Wilson provided many "wow" moments in the first practice of the week, exploding off the line of scrimmage to eat up the cushion of opposing cornerbacks. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound receiver had a quiet year for the Cardinal (26 catches, 418 yards and 4 TDs), but he was the best wideout on the National roster on Day 1.
		</p>

		<p>
			Wilson's explosive ability off the line and power to push press coverage has him moving up my board. Coming into the week he was a late-rounder, but he looks more like a third-round prospect after proving his physical traits can pop outside the very conservative Stanford offensive system.
		</p>

		<p>
			Tyrique Stevenson, CB, Miami-FL
		</p>

		<p>
			In a cornerback class waiting for someone to stand out, Stevenson stole the show in the afternoon practice session. His length pops off the field, and at 6-foot and 204 pounds, he has NFL size to play on the outside. Stevenson's best trait, though, is his recovery speed, which showed up routinely in practice against the best receivers the American roster has to offer. He is the best cornerback on either roster and shouldn't be a surprise as a top-40 selection. He had two interceptions and six pass breakups this season. -- Miller
		</p>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>
	Notes:
</p>

<blockquote class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote="">
	<div class="ipsQuote_citation">
		Quote
	</div>

	<div class="ipsQuote_contents">
		<p>
			Clemson defensive end K.J. Henry was very impressive in positional drills on the first day of practice, showing excellent body control and agility in space during zone drops and chase drills. He was overshadowed by the first-rounders while playing on the Clemson defensive line, but he is coming off his best season and can be, at worst, a very solid role player in the NFL. He's a fringe top-100 player for me.
		</p>

		<p>
			Texas running back Roschon Johnson was the most impressive running back of Day 1. A 6-foot, 225-pound back with great power, Johnson was recruited to Texas as a quarterback before moving to running back after injuries hit the Longhorns. Scouts tell me his football instincts and work ethic are off the charts. His ability to pick up the pass rush in one-on-one drills Tuesday was also top-notch, and his power, explosiveness and hands were all on display. Johnson is a sneaky Round 3-4 player with starter traits, despite playing behind Bijan Robinson at Texas.
		</p>

		<p>
			Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave was billed by scouts as the best pass-catcher in attendance at the Senior Bowl, and he absolutely looked the part on Tuesday. He missed all but two games in 2022 to a knee injury but looks healthy running around without a brace on his recently repaired knee. He's a big throwback tight end (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) who will dominate the middle of the field. Musgrave has gotten consistent first-round grades from NFL scouts.
		</p>

		<p>
			Everyone likes a sleeper, and the Senior Bowl is great for finding them. Kansas State cornerback Julius Brents stood out in 11-on-11 situations with his tough, physical style of coverage at 6-foot-3 and 202 pounds. Brents was the surprise of entire day on Tuesday and will send me back to the film room to see how his in-season play matched his practice performance.
		</p>

		<p>
			Illinois safety Sydney Brown is a player to watch Wednesday when the teams move to full-padded practices. He's an urgent, top-down player with disruptive traits, and he shows position flexibility in pro sub-packages. There's a physical demeanor to his game.
		</p>

		<p>
			Iowa cornerback Riley Moss (6-foot, 192 pounds) had a good first day in one-on-one sessions and team drills. He's a technique-sound defender with the lower-body flexibility to change directions. And he matched speed down the field in man coverage.
		</p>

		<p>
			Houston wide receiver Nathaniel Dell lacks ideal NFL size at 5-foot-8 and 163 pounds, but he looked like an explosive target in the pass game on Tuesday, with the lateral speed to separate underneath and the vertical juice to stretch defenders. He was a sudden mover on the field.
		</p>

		<p>
			Another receiver who flashed on Tuesday? Michigan State wide receiver Jayden Reed, who popped during one-on-one drills. He displayed easy separation and set-up ability on in-breakers, while also winning over the top.
		</p>

		<p>
			Ohio State offensive tackle Dawand Jones has an opportunity to move up draft boards this week in Mobile. With his massive 6-foot-8, 375-pound frame and length at the point of attack, Jones can close the door on edge rushers despite his limited foot quickness. His 89½-inch wingspan was the longest measured in at least 25 years at the Senior Bowl.

<p>
	Since there isn't much talk here about college football, I thought maybe lumping it all together when there is something to mention would be helpful....
</p>

<p>
	That being said and being a die hard Buckeyes fan, while I am happy to see them ranked at #3, I don't think their defense is going to keep them there.<br />
	While they don't have anything super tough in front of them until the Michigan game, I'm leery about how they matchup with some of the other top 5 teams.
</p>

<p>
	I think it's cool to see Texas back in the mix, which hasn't happened in quite some time as well.<br />
	Tom Herman (from Cincinnati) that was the Buckeyes OC for a while was a great hire for that program.
</p>

<p>
	For those who watch the polls, the Cincinnati Bearcats also slid in at #25 as well.<br />
	Nice to see a local team making some noise. Luke Fickell (Buckeyes ties) has the Bearcats at 6-0 right now !!!<br />
	While I am a Xavier fan, I still root for the local teams to do well.

	way too early, yet I'll talk about it anyway
</p>

<p>
	The first four picks as I see it should come from (in no particular order)
</p>

<p>
	TE - I like what Hayden Hurst is saying, and I hope he signs a 3-4 year extension before the draft.  If he does, this position can wait til later rounds for depth.  If he doesnt, they need to go TE early
</p>

<p>
	DT - Similar to the above, kinda depends on where DJ Reader stands at years end.  Yes, I know he's signed through 2023.  I love DJ.  Hope he extends.  If he doesnt, they need a baller at NT, preferably one who can help the pass rush a bit.  An absolute stud 3 down DT would be wonderful
</p>

<p>
	CB - I like Apple a lot better than I did before he became a Bengals.  he's resurrected his career here.  I think he'll ask for elite CB money.  He's good but not elite.  We probably are losing our TE-covering CB as well.  We need to look for a starting quality CB.  This probably needs to be the R1 pick
</p>

<p>
	LB - Germain Pratt is a FA after 2022, and unless he wants to sign for fairly team-friendly money I think we lose him, although I think he is very underrated and will hate to lose him.   Have to save money to extend Wilson, though
</p>

<p>
	----
</p>

<p>
	so TJ, no OLs?  WTF dude?
</p>

<p>
	well, injuries could change this, but with the OL settling down this past week I think the OLine we have is finally earning the big money they were paid.  We need depth at all 3 spots, especially OC, but those guys can be picked up in R5 or later

			The Supreme Court of the United States unanimously affirmed a ruling Monday that provides for an incremental increase in how college athletes can be compensated and also opens the door for future legal challenges that could deal a much more significant blow to the NCAA's current business model.
		</p>

		<p>
			Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the court's opinion, which upheld a district court judge's decision that the NCAA was violating antitrust law by placing limits on the education-related benefits that schools can provide to athletes. The decision allows schools to provide their athletes with unlimited compensation as long as it is some way connected to their education.
		</p>

		<p>
			Gorsuch wrote that the nation's highest court limited the scope of its decision on those education-related benefits rather than delving further into questions about the association's business model. Justice Brett Kavanaugh published a concurring opinion that takes a harder line, suggesting that the NCAA's rules that restrict any type of compensation -- including direct payment for athletic accomplishments -- might no longer hold up well in future antitrust challenges.

<p>

<p>
	Sample           B       rotational edge rusher, fills the need at edge with Ossai
</p>

<p>
	Shelvin            C+     limited ability NT/Big boy run stuffer not much pass rush help

<p>
	Smith               A-      looks like the steal of the draft for the Bengals, ranked similar to Carman by some (pro football network had him as the third best G prospect in the class)
</p>

<p>
	McPhereson   B       hopefully our starting K for years, 1 round reach but at least they got the K they wanted

<p>
	Hill                    D       not athletic, not a big need, wasted pick

<p>
	<strong><u>PART A : 2020 Season</u></strong>
</p>

<p>
	A1 Get more game reps for players who will be around in 2021.  All of the following non-starters should be getting starters reps now:
</p>

<p>
	--The 4 rookie linebackers (I count Pratt)
</p>

<p>
	--Adeniji (at either ORT or OLG)
</p>

<p>
	--Fred Johnson
</p>

<p>
	--Kareem at DE
</p>

<p>
	--Austin Seibert.  Figure out if he is at least as good as Fat Randy over the remainder of 2020.  If so, he's in, and FR is out
</p>

<p>
	Extend WJ3, Jesse Bates, Spain, Brandon Wilson, and Lawson
</p>

<p>
	<u><strong>PART B: Offseason before the Draft</strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	Fire the coaching staff except Simmons.  New head coach might want to bring in his own guy, but Simmons is there for him to pick up as a quality guy at that spot
</p>

<p>
	Let frequently injured players whose contracts have ended walk.  The best ability is availability
</p>

<p>
	You failed to extend WJ3, Jesse Bates, Spain, Brandon Wilson, and Lawson during the season, right?  DO IT NOW.  NOW DAMNIT.
</p>

<p>
	AJ - we will always love you, wherever you go.  Please come back at the end of your career and retire as a Bengal
</p>

<p>
	Identify and sign a placeholder veteran QB to a 1 or 2 year contract.  This QB will start til New Guy is ready to play.  Neither of the two guys we have now is that guy
</p>

<p>
	Bring in a tier 1 veteran at either the WR, TE, DE, OG, or CB spot.  My preference is OG (and if we wanna get specific, gimme Brandon Scherff) but any of the five will help.
</p>

<p>
	Be on the lookout for a replacement Punter and Longsnapper.  I Love Huber and Harris but they are both FAs and both quite old
</p>

<p>
	<u><strong>Part C: The Draft</strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	We're not gonna draft any linebackers, going on the directive that the 4 newbie linebackers need time to develop together
</p>

<p>
	We're not gonna draft a QB because we're going with the placeholder (mentioned above) and our existing backups (or a surprise UDCFA, ya never know)
</p>

<p>
	Top priority is strengthening both the Offensive and Defensive Lines
</p>

<p>
	We need (much) more than one top notch player so we will be looking very hard at any offers we get for our top 3 pick
</p>

<p>
	Priority of needs:  Passblocking ORT, Passrushing DT, Passblocking OG,  Passrushing DE, Man/Press CB, Three down TE, K, P, LS
</p>

<p>
	<u><strong>Part D: Postdraft</strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	This will be an interesting year with a much lower salary cap than expected due to revenue lost due to COVID.  Teams will be dropping players they'd prefer not to drop because of this lowered salary cap.  We need to be ready to pounce on players dropped in this way that are a serious upgrade to our team
</p>

<p>
	<u><strong>What about Mixon, TJ?</strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	<s>I am really unsure what to do about Mixon.  There's been injuries that have lingered far too long.  He's failed to produce at times when healthy even against weak defenses.  I love the guy's positivity and energy but at the end of the day he needs to be available and producing.  I havent seen enough of either, overall, so I dont know whether to re-sign him (which will cost more than it should given production of late) or let him go.  No need to remind me that Gios not getting any younger.  Open to ideas here.</s>  Uhm, nothing.  He signed an extension earlier this year.....sorry, I missed that.

	If Queen, Murray and Baun are all gone when we get to #33.  I am warming up to trading down 5-7 spots and taking Jeremy Chinn .  If he had played in an SEC school we would be talking about Chinn being at top ten player.  Everyone is saying Simmons had the best LB combine ever, but Chinn might have had a better one.
</p>

<p>
	Simmons ran a 4.39 at 6'4" 238 lbs with a 39" vert and 132" Broad Jump
</p>

<p>
	Chinn ran a 4.45 at 6'3" at 221 lbs with a 41" vert and a 138" Broad Jump.

<p>
	So while there might be a handful of players you like in the later rounds, who's THAT player for you.<br />
	That "Must Have" the Bengals should target that is likely to make an impact early on in their career ??<br />
	I'm thinking 5th-7th rounds...
</p>

<p>
	<strong>Devin Duvernay, WR, Texas</strong>- Obviously we've been talking about him here for a while, but I love what he brings.  Hope he's there later.<br /><br /><strong>Colby Parkinson, TE, Stanford</strong>- A big red-zone target for Burrow to develop with.  I really am not sold on any of our TE's.<br /><br /><strong>Trey Adams, OT, Washington</strong>- Oft-injured, but once thought to be a top end OT prospect.  Worth the risk in the later rounds for sure.
</p>

<p>
	<br />
	The player I want more than most though is: <u><strong>Justin Strnad, LB, Wake Forest</strong></u>
</p>

<p>
	While Wake Forest isn't a football powerhouse, Strnad is 6'3, 235 and is considered to be prototypical in coverage.<br />
	He was the captain of the Wake Forest defense (see leader) but coming off a torn biceps in October of last season.<br />
	We lost some special teams players and he has also led his team in ST tackles as well.<br />
	I really like his game and think he could be a starter in the near future.  Here's a write up:
</p>

<p>
	<em>"He's built like a tall, puffed-up safety, but he also runs like one with the range to find play after play when he's kept clean. Strnad could have issues against downhill running attacks due to a lack of size and hand usage. He's an explosive athlete and aggressive striker, but big backs could wear him down on the pro level. He has the twitch and burst to roam from sideline to sideline and should play faster and more efficiently as his recognition improves. He's an ascending playmaker whose athleticism, third-down talent and special-teams ability could make him a middle-round selection as a 4-3 WILL or 3-4 ILB if his medicals check out."</em>
</p>

			<strong>Calvin Ridley: The Slide<br /><br />
			21. BENGALS _ WR Calvin Ridley, Alabama; Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com</strong><br /><br />
			Don’t get mad. Yes, they are stacked with young, unproven receivers. Take a deep breath. Right, they did take<span> </span><a href="http://www.bengals.com/team/roster/john-ross/05f28075-6904-4a2d-af67-1d0a10b3190b/" rel="external nofollow" style="color:#f04e23;" title="John Ross"><span>John Ross</span></a><span> </span>and all 17 of his snaps at No. 9 last year. But don’t read Ridley’s name in there.
		</div>

		<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#393939;font-size:14px;padding:0px;">
			<br />
			Read, “The Slide.” Ridley is symbolic of the dilemma they’ve probably been grappling with the last month. The Bengals are going to come face-to-face with their best-player-available philosophy and balancing it against need. So the discussion has to be had.<br /><br />
			And it is doubtful Ridley is going to be here. Hard to see him getting past Dallas. And it’s hard to see him getting that far as one of the few players in this draft that can make an impact for you right away.
		</div>

		<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#393939;font-size:14px;padding:0px;">

		</div>

		<div style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#393939;font-size:14px;padding:0px;">
			But if it’s not Ridley, it is quite possible there is going to a highly-graded player like him that falls. “The Slide.” Especially if those fifth and sixth QBs happen to go.<br /><br />
			How are those centers or guards or backers looking if a pass rusher like Davenport or a run stuffer like Vea is there?<br /><br />
			That also means there is probably going to be some interest in teams trading up to 21 to get Ridley or “The Slide.” The Bills would have grabbed Ridley with the next pick. The Bengals already have 11 picks, but that won’t stop them from trading back.<br /><br />
			How about the Patriots picking at 23 and 31? Bengals president Mike Brown and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick have made four trades and one of them was on the clock in the 2012 first round when the Pats traded up from 27 to, yes, 21. They may want to come up from 31, but it’s probably not the best of matches this year. Both clubs are looking for tackles. Although Ridley did visit Foxboro this week.<br /><br />
			But, if they’re as hot for a QB as some people believe, 21 could be a spot for familiar trading partners. So, relax. It probably won’t be Ridley. But they will have to have a discussion.
		</div>
	</div>
</blockquote>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	I can see this happening if the top rated WR (Ridley) manages to fall that far (doubtful) and McGlinchy isn't there either.  But what realistic scenario has him falling that far? At #21, if the top rated player at any position is there, outside of ST's and FB,  I would think they'd get heavy consideration regardless.  But I don't really expect that to be the case.
