nfl draft....

he-he. Yeah, we'd take Mario Williams in the LATE SECOND! He'll be gone after the first five picks. I haven't seen Bing a lot in coverage and don't know how well he applies to Marvin's interchangeable safety philosophy, but frankly, who cares. He is always where the ball is and puts the fear of God into WR's with his hits.

Per gbnreport.com's current first round mock, the Bengals select...

http://utsports.collegesports.com/sports/m...na_jesse00.html

(best read while listening to the old "Hawaii 5-0" theme )

about.com's '06 mock pick:

http://football.about.com/od/nationalfootb.../gabewatson.htm

Doesn't sound like Marvin's type but would make us "we need a big run stuffer in the middle" types happy.

draftking.com picks...Rod Wright (yeah, fat chance). Profile courtesy of nfldraftblitz.com:

http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/Profiles/rodr...ightprofile.htm

Hmmm...DT...DT...DT...sensing a pattern here...

...but nfldraftforecast.com begs to differ with...

http://uclabruins.collegesports.com/sports...marcedes00.html

Tight...end. Tight end. Is that a position in football?

And the pattern resumes with robscouting.com...(another nfldraftblitz.com profile)

http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/Profiles/orienharrisprofile.htm

This guy sounds more up Marvin's alley.

BTW,the nfldraftblitz.com gys are down with the DT thing...they like...

Why don't we trade Jon Kitna, Kelly Washington , and maybe a 3rd round draft pick for John Abraham from the Jets? He wants out, we could use that kind of pass rusher. Works for us and the Jets. What do you guys think?

no to draft ngata ;)

1.)DT named Ngata

2.)Safety (top available)

3.)Top TE available like davis :P

Hello? Wake up and smell the freaking coffee? WE WILL NEVER FEATURE A BIGTIME TIGHT END IN THE CURRENT OFFENSIVE SCHEME!

Vernon Davis is actually a good blocker. He could stay on the field on all downs.

and that will be a weakness though If a SS or DT worth spot are there I'd say take it but TE would make our offense that more deadly ...we just need to find a new TE coach =P

It is hard to say who they take it depends who is left on the board when they pick.

I think they will get rid of Kim Herring and likely sign a free agent S because they are fairly easy to find

in free agency.

The most needed positions besides S are DE and DT both positions have 4 or 5 studs and the rest of the

guys far below in talent. Both positions are pretty thin this year.

The position with the most depth is the OT position. Teams may get starters in the 7th round.I have never seen a crop of tackles like this.

I would not be surprised if the Bengals take a tackle if one of the top guys fall to them. There is only one year left on both tackles contract and Anderson has been playing hurt for the last 2 years.

If they take the best player available I would think they take an OT unless they reason they will be able to get a good tackle in the later rounds. Not so much for need but more for the BPA theory.

The best thing to do in this draft ,since the Bengals are drafting at the bottom of the round, is trade down and pick up more picks that is how teams like the Patriots,Eagles, and Seahawks do it.

If they draft on need I would go:

1)DT

2)DE

3)S

4)CB

5)TE

6)RB

7)QB or another DE or DT

** Some scouts have OH State LB Bobby Carpenter rated low,he may slip to the 3rd or 4th round. With Marvins love of LB's,even though the Bengals are pretty deep at the position I do not see Marvin passing on him.

I'm tempted to say..."Ngata Chance"...and leave it at that, but my early leanings are pretty close to what you posted. I think most mock drafts are going to surrender to the "Round up the usual suspects" strategy and link the Bengals with any DT available. I also think most mocks are going to link the Bengals with a player who looks like what they think we need, like a massive Gabe Watson, while ignoring those that fit the profile of what Lewis has actually signed. Pencil in Jesse Mahelona here. But if Ngata isn't available, and he won't be, then you're left with some interesting DT prospects who all seem to have a few warts. So I tend to lean towards a draft strategy that takes advantage of the Bengals late draft positioning by filling needs at safety or tight end. Darnell Bing, Vernon Davis, Marcedes Lewis, all look like great late round prospects who represent the very best prospects available at their positions and one or more might fall right in the Bengals laps.

I agree. While I was browsing all those mocks, one thing that stood out was the relatively few safeties and TEs going in the first round (and remember how Heath Miller fell to the Steelers last year?). So yeah, if its a choice between taking the No. 1 safety or tight end versus the third or fourth or fifth DT...why reach? Go BPA.

They also need a kickoff specialist (draft or free agent) who can consistantly kick it down to the goal line or into the end zone.

This in no way effects Shane Grahmn as the place kicker as he is the man but I think they really do need to look at this option in spite of losing an active roster spot.

This would give the defense anywhere between 15 to 20 yards more to work with on every defensive series !

This is a dire need as they can't keep getting kickoffs that are fielded between the 15 and the 20 yard lines. This is constantly setting the defense up by consistantly giving the opposing team a short field @ ~ the 35 to 40 yard line.

My opinion is that this option alone could reduce opponent touchdowns by ~20 to 25% and field goals by ~10 to 15%.

This option along with a run stuffing defensive tackle,an aggresive, pass rushing end and a strong, hard hitting, cover safty could immediately turn this into one of the elite defenses in the NFL.

A kickoff specialist is not going to happen. Marvin and Simmons have said that before. That active player is way too valuable to have it tied up with someone who might get on the field 5 times on a good day.

Exactly...the Colts tried this by acquiring Dave Rayner, but its only amounted to a 5-10 yard difference.

Ngata wont be there ....

Jesse Mahelona or Claude Wroten at DT would be likelly choices.

both are penetrators...

If you want the run stuffing type of Dt think Gabe Watson or Steve Fifita...

SS Bing could drop if teams are afraid of his injury problems..If healthy and a good combine workout he'll rise to the top 15 imo...

Greg Blue hits like a backer... wideouts think about himover the middle.. His pass coverage skills are not good... not good at all.. He'd be a project on coverage....

I would definetly be okay with Bing... That would give us the best secondary in the NFL... especially in the nickle, but I am still a big fan of Mahelona.

If we could get a decent DT in FA, then Bing would be my first choice... but my reasons for this have changed. If you look at the stats, we've only had two bad games in rushing defense. discounting the games against Pit (the first time) and Jax... we are allowing only 101.8 rushing yards/game... 11th in the league.

I know you can't just throw out 2 games... but our rush defense is hardly the mess that we often make it out to be. What we need is a better pass rush... and Mahelona helps this.

But like I said... If we take Bing, I'm happy... but DT is still our biggest need in my opinion.
