Good, too, that they highlighted Housh's YAC.

Overall, that was a pretty good show w/ lots of solid ML bytes. Liked the way they featured as many players as they did individually. Especially liked the bits about Justin and Madieu.

Not sure about why they called it "Strongheaded", was it?

Rather they would've called it "Hair on Fire"

C'mon, they called it strongheaded because of the man who stands at the head of the team. In fact, the first 5 minutes of the feature was nothing but a glorious loop of Marvin spouting off Marvin-isms. "Don't worry, we're going to get this right. They can't run away from you. You're going to kick their asses."

The end result was me falling into a frenzy that eventually stopped only when my wife walked through the door while the program was playing. Sadly, before regaining my composure I have to admit that I chop blocked my woman to the ground!

Favorite moment?

About ten minutes in the music switches gears to a decidely orange crunkish beat while the image showed Madieu Williams blitzing an opposing QB. Woof. My eyes than glazed over in rapture as the images switched to slow motion shots of Justin Smith killing absolutely everyone.

And CantStop85, Love that Abney avatar, im a HUGE Kentucky fan, and Abney has always been my favorite Wildcat. :P

Derek Abney was also my favorite Kentucky player. Of course, there aren't a whole lot of players left to choose from now with everyone quitting or being kicked off the team. I don't know if UK Football will ever be a winning program again. I need something else to be excited about besides Kentucky Basketball. (Note: I hate Kelenna Azubuike and Randolph Morris)

I tell you what...I was in such bliss watching that last night...as I will again tonight...when my wife looked over at me and saw me in my state she said..."Hey, let's not waste that"...

Bengal tapes as a porn substitute?

The mind boggles at the very thought.

That said, major props extended to TheBigOrangeWife as the regret we feel in our life most often results from the things we choose not do as opposed to the things we attempt to do, but fail. Just remember to use a towel to cleanup afterwards.

No doubt Hair. :player:

Caught it again this morning and IIRC Madieu is touted as "a lethal combination of speed and aggression". Damn if it ain't good to have one of them.

Seeing Justin highlights is just a reminder how quick, strong, and relentless this guy really is. Moving him to the LDE is gonna be something to see, I suspect, and could be the huge number breakout sackwise that he never hit yet. Say 15? :o

BTW the name of it was "Headstrong", which I guess is better than "Headstone"

Brad, I never got your PM (private message)..if you tried to email me, it didn't come. Bengal for life, I got your address but no name, which I need.

Last call for DVD's...I'm making out the envelopes now.

I couldn't get the other AFC teams on there, nor the total access interview, but I did get Carson and Chad on Teamates game show.

I expect better sack numbers due to the switch, but if Smith stuffs the run on the defensive left the way he did on the opposite side...I'll be a happy Bengal fan regardless of the final total. That said, put me down for an even 10.

I'm sorry, I was not...It was Chad doing like a 2 minute thing interviewing different players, but I had trouble burning it and lost it. I'm sorry...the teamates thing is cool though...and the highlights is way cool.

Justin really ought to hit double digits in sacks going against RTs this year.

But he'll proly have to give up some sacks to Pollack when they game, which I expect will happen a lot since Justin is solid dropping back in short coverage.

Don't mind if they cue up his highlight film for 2005 already. B)

He played a little...they didn't show much...he got beat 20 to 0 by some other NFL player.

He was mostly interviewing players and asking them how they liked there rating.

I might expect more sacks than the ten I predicted if I actually knew how the Bengals were going to use Smith. I don't.

Forgive me if you've heard this rant before.

Two years ago I broke down every defensive snap over 5 full games using my beloved Tivo unit and a trusty 3-ring notepad. I wasn't looking for anything in particular...just trying to determine how playing in Lewis's scheme differed from LeBeau's. I'll argue that I learned plenty with my curious note taking, but the one thing that really stood out was how limited the twists, stunts, or gaming was on the Bengals defensive right side when compared to the left. In fact, most of the pass pressure generated by gaming on the defensive right resulted from Smith rushing wide before completely breaking off his attack...allowing other Bengal defenders to slip into the newly created blitz lane. Most often this was Brian Simmons, but I was a little bit shocked to learn how often the blitzer was Tory James.

I can't say whether the above stunting strategy was due to the design of the scheme itself or was simply a reflection of the individual skill sets of each starting player available. But here's just one example of the differences I'm struggling to describe.

Picture both DT's firing off to their left at the snap of the ball while the RDE takes a couple steps to the right before settling into outside containment. Now try to picture the LDE taking one step outside before reversing hard...eventually slipping behind BOTH of the outside shifting DT's. The LDE continues to slide laterally at full speed until he clears both DT's...usually bursting into the open directly infront of the offensive center. The defender usually has a huge advantage due to the speed he's built up before flashing infront of a nearly stationary offensive blocker. It's all pretty standard stuff and is unusal only in the sense that it results in a defensive lineman attacking a gap that was so far from his original down position.

Regardless of how well I've described the defensive stunting described above the real rub is simply this. During those five games I witnessed Clemons being featured on this stunt about twenty times...almost always resulting in extreme pass rush pressure or the occasional sack. Meanwhile, during the same 5 game stretch, I counted just one example where the Bengals used the same stunt from Justin Smith's defensive right.

So again, I have to wonder aloud if the roughly 20-1 disparity is a result of the design of the scheme itself or whether it reflects the coaches opinion about the skill sets of his individual players. I highly suspect it's the former, and we'll see Smith doing exactly the same things the Bengals once demanded of Clemons. But a guess is still a guess. For all I know we'll see Robert Geathers being featured from the opposite side while Smith continues grinding one-on-one.

Questions, questions, questions. Now that players have been shifted, do the coaches further adjust by turning Justin Smith loose on playmaking stunts like the one described above OR do they attempt to stop the bleeding on the defensive left by once again tasking Smith first and foremost with the outside containment role he's so good at? Does flipping Smith result in more playmaking stunts featuring him or will the emphasis be placed on developing Pollack in the Joker role? Hey, watch and learn, right?

In the end, pun intended, I guess what I'm saying is this. Projections of a 15 sack breakout season for Smith seem premature to me and may foster expectations that Smith can't meet due to many factors he can't control.

I can't say whether the above stunting strategy was due to the design of the scheme itself or was simply a reflection of the individual skill sets of each starting player available.

No doubt partly both.

One thing a stunting scheme allows is to make up for the inability of DTs to get pressure on their own. Italso allows less speedy DEs to pass rush better.

But it also creates confusion and forces reaction by O-line that helps get them out of position, whether the stunt is DE/DT, the DTs, or like you've described.

Big Duane stunts much better than he speed rushes or outmuscles blockers at the end, which surely factors into the reliance on a stunting scheme when he's in.

Personally, I hope the D don't play scheme for scheme's sake but they stunt an awful lot. No doubt Justin is quicker than Duane and could stunt even quicker but I have to say I think he can rush straight up rush and get more sacks than he did at RDE.

But you're right on in saying how Justin is used is not all clear. And I'm hoping that's a good thing to make the D more multiple and add to the QB confusion.

We'll see how it unfolds, but I strongly suspect we'll see Pollack and Justin game alot where Justin lures a blocker out then drops back into coverage to let Pollack rush for what is the equivalent of a delayed blitz.

BTW helluva post Hair B)
