A little more detail on possibly using the tag via Hobs.

Quote

The team has yet to make a decision about using the franchise tag on one of their free agents. The deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m., but Tobin cited reports it may be pushed back. Plus, he said, the Bengals have yet to receive a final salary cap number from the NFL and want to use the info to make the final call. The two prime candidates are pass rusher Carl Lawson and cornerback William Jackson III.

We know the tag. Was going to be 15.9 for Lawson and 14.9 for Jackson if they had gone that route. IF they had gone that route, that is immediately unavailable money under the cap - the full amount.

NFLPA was pushing for a delay because TV deals are about to be renewed at a larger rate which would grow salary cap I. Future years.   My guess is they were trying to buy some time for tag candidates that were close to long term deals or maybe trying to get some future growth into this cap.

I want this WR.

W A N T

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/31039226/buffalo-bills-release-wr-john-brown-dl-quinton-jefferson

John Brown
5'11" 180 4.34-40 33r/458y/3td
PFF 70.3
https://www.pff.com/nfl/players/john-brown/8726

he did have some injury issues last year and is a little older than I'd prefer at 30, but these should keep his price down.

shouldnt be too expensive, was productive, has the deep speed we need, and just got released

It is my understanding that since he's been released, he can be negotiated with right now.....no need to wait til the 15th

I see him as 1-2 year rental and filling our immediate need for a deep threat

You know, we havent been talking much about Corey Linsley in this space

But we should be

https://www.pff.com/nfl/players/corey-linsley/8796

I think the reason we haven't been talking about him is.....well.......Hopkins

Because Hopkins (PFF: 63.8) has been relatively good, we tend to think of that position as in good shape.  But 63.8 is kinda, well, average-ish.  Which given most of the rest of our options is really damn good :-)

So consider for a moment that not only can Hopkins play OG, but he has been decently good when played there.  If you shift your thinking to Hopkins as a Guard, the Center spot opens up, and then you take a look at Linsley and his

89.9

PFF Rating.  Thats right, 90.  Nine-tee.   well, ok, 0.1 off, but cmon.  Ninety.  The other OGs we are talking about arent even in the 80s.  Thuney is in the seventies.

If you sign this guy, you'd shift Hopkins to ORG and Hopkins would serve as a high-quality backup at OC as well, in case Linsley were to get hurt.

This also gives us the luxury to let Hopkins get to 100% healthy, with Price (or a top shelf draft pick) playing ORG at the start of 2021 instead of OC

The only real downside on Linsley is his age.  He will be 30 when the season starts.  But I think with how high his level of play is right now he could start to lose the battle with Father Time and still be very good in three years

More good reads on Linsley

https://nflspinzone.com/2021/03/11/corey-linsley-free-agency-landing-spots-2021/

so my new favorite "Guard" to sign right now is Linsley.  I think he'll sign for about the same money Thuney would, but give us more bang for our bucks.  Gimme a 3 year deal (36M-ish) or a very front-loaded 4 year deal (45M-ish)

Carl Lawson was on a podcast with Paul Dehner today

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/exclusive-carl-lawson-joins-htpg/id1477129521?i=1000512572707

takes:

1. none of the tweets that some thought related to the tag or other negativity were about problems with Cincinnati

2. Cincinnati is the front runner to get him signed

3. but yet, Cincinnati hasnt begun negotiating with him

I have no idea how item 3 is even possible.  The FO is even shittier than I thought they were (and I have never felt good about them, to be diplomatic) if thats true

Possibly the whole extended family is on another European vacation.  They’ve done that before, to the Bengals’ detriment.
