2016 Bengals Free Agents

Welcome to another episode of "As the Roster Churns".

M. Jones - would like to have him back.   However his new contract is going to be 6-9 in cap hit.   Putting them in the range of 20 mil for him and AJ.     2,100 yards between the two.  Add Sanu contract it's probably 24 mil cap room for all 3.   All 3 2,500 yards last year.      Not worth 24 mil in cap room because with AJ you can reasonably work a situation even with two new #2 and #3 they go 2,300 yards.    Because Eifert/Gio  open up holes and opportunities.     Depth would be a concern if something happened to AJ like 2014.    Or like what happened to Green Bay this past year.

Iloka-  like to have him back.   But Pac/Nelson have played at a higher level and Iloka probably going to be overpaid the next couple years.   This will be classic Tampa Bay MJ and Anthony Collins FA signings.    Pac/Nelson with Williams will bring as solid play.   Once again depth because questionable.

Vinny Rey not sure what you pay him and why.   His role needs to be reduced to AJ Hawk level and they need to bring in higher level front line guys.

Bengals enter FA and they'll take their hits with some FA losses but they are in a good position to recover much more than 2014.    The big risk will be in the offensive passing game but that's reduced if Andy Dalton displays 2015 form.    I think they have young defenders that could fill the void and the unit improves as long as Atkins, Dunlap, and Burfict continue at their output.

The issue in the passing game is that if they blow up the WR unit behind Green, they significantly increase the chance that 2016 Andy Dalton looks more like the 2014 version, not the 2015 all-pro. A big part of the reason Dalton's INTs shot up in 2014 was that due to lack of other options he was forcing the ball to AJ. By the same token, a big reason he looked so good last season was that he had such a cornucopia of weapons to throw to.

Letting Jones walk reminds me far too much of losing Housh. Especially considering that this isn't a strong draft for wideouts, same as back then too. I've seen the Laverneus Coles/Terrell Owens/Jerome Simpson/Bubba Caldwell movie before and it wasn't any fun. I vote no to a sequel.

Don't go to Cleveland, Marvin.  Even if they find a competent qb, Josh Gordon could get healthy.  That happens and Gorden will get even more throws than AJ did in Cinci.  Marvin could end up an even more marginalized number 2 receiver on an infinitely crappier team.  Bad career move!

there probably isn't a better metaphor for the bengals approach to FA than standing around holding doors open.

Good one.  Another good one is of an old man sitting on a couch with a very friendly, loyal, lap dog.  The dog's name is Tate, of course.
