Kingwilly's Way 2 Early Mock r1-3

Recommended Posts

Ok, so yes, it's a bit too early to round out a mock. But despite not knowing our FA statuses, and any comp picks we may get, there is clarity as to our needs on the roster. r1-3.

So, here goes:

r1 - 21 - Arik Armstead - Oregon - DE - He announced he was entering the draft on the 13th. He is a true 5 technique with the rare size, speed and strength that could immediately do for the Bengals D-line what Hunt and Clarke have not: anchor opposite Dunlap and deliver plays against the run and pass. He could end up gone by 21, depending on how his numbers shape up from the combine. As of right now, he is my desired pick, to address a serious deficiency on the defense.

r1 - Back-up pick - Sammie Coates - WR - Auburn - A player who may be still a bit raw, with limited routes, but there is no denying his abilities. Would be ideal opposite Green as a co-2 with Jones. Would deliver massive mismatch chances for Dalton, which is what he badly needs. Torn on this, as I see DE and WR as the two biggest issues on this team.

r2 - 42 - Lorenzo Mauldin - OLB - Louisville - Going down the path of an OLB who can rush the passer, another things this team lacked. I think Mauldin is the ideal 3rd down rush LB (Which this team does not have). A rotation with Burfict, FNR, Lamur and Mauldin would be very scary.

r2 - Back-up pick - Carl Davis - DT - Iowa - Moving inside, Davis is a reliable and productive interior player who could immediately contribute, considering the limited production of the Still and Thompson picks. Some fresh blood is needed with Atkins still working to regain his form, they need another big person to be inside and take on the double teams and crash the A gaps. Peko being on the other side of his career mountain makes this pick look smarter.

r3 - 63 - Josue Matias - OG - Florida State - Maybe not an obvious pick but with Boling a FA, and injury concern for Pollack, this is a great player for r3. Part of an obviously successful program, has the size and versatility that the team desires. Would not complain one bit if Matias is taken by the Bengals.

r3 - Back-up pick - Maxx Williams - TE - Minnesota - Depending on Gresham coming back, I'd dare to take Williams anyways. A lack of effective TE depth hurt Dalton substantially down the stretch, and clearly in the playoff game. Williams projects here (or higher) and has very clear abilities that would work in Hue's offense where the TE is prominent, and often 2 TEs are on the field. No profile yet but here is a link that discuses him: http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_27267709/gophers-football-maxx-williams-rated-highly-by-nfl

Ok, let me know you thoughts....

Im not sold on taking a WR high in this draft, can get a speedster to stretch the field late. Build the lines and LB corp with the first four rounds.

Williams TE would be an interesting pick in round 3.

At this point I think Armstead will be there if they want him. He's got everything you could ask for except the production, which worries me some, but I like him a whole hell of a lot better than the Bud Dupree pick Kiper is trying to peddle.

If they take Coates to line up opposite Green, I say screw the run, dig out Brat's old playbook and BOMBS AWAY!!!! :lmao:

BPA LB, DT or whatever they didn't take in the first of DE or WR would all be fine with me in the second.

Linemen are always good.

There is no way on gawd's green Earth that Williams makes it to the third. I think he's just too raw to go in the first like some are thinking (unless Cleveland, which has 2 picks, pulls the trigger...), but he will get nabbed in the second.

More than likely Williams is gone by middle or end of second. I don't see any other TE right now that is worth going after, so maybe FA is the best bet to shore up that depth.

Watch, Coates is going to put on a show at the combine and end up a top 15 pick. He's a freak, like. Coates and Green, with Jones coming back, would be a very difficult 3 to work against. Think of them, with Gio out of the backfield... should give Dalton serious options.

Since we are talking about WR's and TE's, what about one that has played both ??

Devin Funchess

I think he's been mentioned here or there, but i'm a bit intrigued with what he may bring as a TE.

I do like the mock though King !!!

I really like Florida State's TE, O'Leary. Looks like an excellent all-around TE who can actually move and catch. Would love him in the third, as long as he's healthy.

If we are talking a true TE, without going in the early rounds, give me Todd Heuerman from Ohio St.

He's a solid all around tight end, but that offense doesn't utilize the TE's all that much.

I'm good with Funchess, though it may minimize the need for Coates, since Funchess could maybe solve the issue. I'd still look for a true TE, as suggested O'Leary could be a good fit.
