Defensive Perspective

Before I throw Guenther under the bus I looked back at 2012 with Zimmer.

Here's how it went:

FIRST HALF

@ Baltimore 13-43 L

Cleveland 34-27 W

@ Washington 38-31W

@ Jacksonville 27-10 W

Miami 13-17 L

@ Cleveland 24-34 L

Pittsburgh 17-24 L

Denver 23-31 L

A 3-5 record with the defense giving up 218 points for a game average of 27.25.

SECOND HALF

Giants 31-13 W

@ KC 28-6 W

Oakland 34-10 W

@ SD 20-13 W

Dallas 19-20 L

@ Philadelphia 34-13 W

@ Pittsburgh 13-10 W

Baltimore 23-17 W

A 7-1 record with defense giving up 102 points for a game average of 12.75.

Keep in mind that this was Zimmer's 5th year as the Bengals DC, and his second year of the Dalton era!

It took Zimmer, a 5 year DC, half a season to adjust.

Under the circumstances, I think Guenther should be given some slack.

Good stuff!

Oddly, I feel like the loss of Rey M. will benefit the defense in the long run.

It did last year.

I think the point here is Zimmer had 6 years as Bengals DC and 3 years with the Dalton gang to get to the #3 defense in the league.

Paul has had 5 games.
