Draft Pick Watch

Wow, that was one of the most dominating performance i've seen from a DT in a long time. I saw Suh doing that at Nebraska and i'm not saying he's Suh, but good God almighty.

I hear the Suh comparison all the time and it fits well enough. But IMHO Fairley is Warren Sapp V2, both in regards to the way they play and because of personalities. Outgoing, funny, combative, and borderline dirty. A dominating performance, yet hardly perfect due to a couple of silly penalties. (Can a defensive lineman be too aggressive?)Not to make too big a point of it, but the Bengals defense sorely lacks someone with that type of enforcer/dirty personality.

A very fun game to watch, btw.

Couldn't agree more about what this defensive line has lacked in intensity. Not that I want to see our guys get silly penalties, but watching Fairly giving the guy he just blasted the business was pretty amusing from a spectators standpoint. It got a point where I stopped focusing on the game as a whole and focused soley on what Fairley was doing. He was dropping into coverage, disrupting the backfield by getting penetration CONSTANTLY, and forcing the QB to become mobile and changing what the offense wanted to do.

Simple said, Fairly was an animal out there who I could have easily given the MVP to.

He single handedly changed what the Oregon offense wanted to do out there.

They need to find a way to get Fairly, if he dosnt go number 1 there may be a chance he falls to #4. He is a 4-3 guy so he would be a perfect fit for this defense. With him on this d-line i think it would create something we have not seen in some time, a great D-line!!! Come on Fairly fall to #4

Look like I have a lot of company in Camp DT this year. :sure:

Yup.I haven't been pro 1st rnd DT since my Big boy Ngata was in the draft...Man so many people were down on him "Whol lot of nata" no motor etc...

Yet now he's one of the most dominate if not dominate DT's in football :o,He's gonna be a Free Agent this year only if the bengals could snag him from the Ravens :>

Ngata was and continues to be a beast. I loved him coming out of college and even though he plays for the Ravens, he's one of those guys that makes you just say, WOW when you see him play. Dominating. Yeah, if we can get that out of Fairley, it's a no brainer.

Fairley, Atkins, Dunlap, and MJ would make for a very fast d-line.

I think Fairley was impressive - but I think with that performance he'll shoot straight up. Not a value pick anymore and (as mentioned) very likely gone at #4.

Quite frankly his interviews after the game will help him too - sounds like he's got no aversion to spending time in the film room, and he seems like a genuinely good kid (despite being nasty on the field). Pretty much everything you'd want at DT.

give it some time the combine can work wonders for draft stock. i personally would rather have quinn over bowers if fairleys off the board, but im not so sure he will be.

Yup I'd say chances were low before the NC...I think now we have no shot...did we really have to win 4 games :P

No way either Bowers or Fairley fall to us at 4 whichever one falls past Denver (if one does) will not get past Buffalo.

That is why we would do better looking at other options, no OTs available, both Amakamura and Peterson carry a high first round grade but do we want to spend a #4 pick on a CB (though IMHO Peterson could be an awesome FS), Not sold on Green but Baldwin might slip to the second and would be fine with him there (we have better track record with high 2nd rd. WRs than first rounders), Big fan of Von Miller, Dareus or Quinn or Clayborn are also possibilities at DE Quinn is the best pass rusher Dareus is probably the best all around guy but has motivational issues (takes plays off and is not as dominating as he could be), and then there are the QBs.....it is very likely that all the QBs will now be available at #4 are any worth a high first round selection and what message would that send to Palmer.

1-5 Mock

Carolina: Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

Denver: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

Buffalo: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri

Cincinnati: Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M

Arizona: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Eh not sure How I feel bout taking LB 4th overall when we always invest so much in to the position... we will need a replacement for Rey if he goes inside (I'd prefer Brandon Johnson or Muckleroy even)

http://www.allproblogger.com/2011/01/11/bengals-will-get-elite-player-at-4/

John Thornton's thoughts. One of the four will be left. Kinda hard to screw it up he says.

It will be pretty hard for the Bengals to screw up their first pick in April’s NFL Draft. I’m sure they won’t have another Andre Smith type pick, where they will be moving the guy from one position to another. The top four guys will be players that can come in right away and play. But taking either of the top four guys will mean that you will be giving up on a current player on the Bengals roster. If the pick is Clemson DE DaQuan Bowers, that means that they are saying that current DE Michael Johnson won’t be a full time starter going forward. If they select Georgia WR AJ Green, they will either be ending the Chad Ochocinco era or sitting the young duo of Simpson and Caldwell on the bench again. If they select LSU DB Patrick Peterson, they will be saying goodbye to DB Johnathan Joseph. And if they select Auburn DT Nick Fairley, they will be saying that DT Pat Sims is not starting material. If I had to choose a guy for the Bengals right now, it would be Georgia WR AJ Green. He is a big NFL ready WR and he is a No 1 type play maker short and deep. Something that the Bengals are lacking in the passing game. DT Nick Fairley would be my second choice. He’s truly Warren Sapp-like. Real deal. But the Peko/Sims/Atkins DT rotation is ok. Bowers would be my 3rd choice and he would be a luxury pick because of the good young DE’s on the roster. And Peterson is my 4th. He’s a very good cover guy and can return punts. Based on the teams drafting #1 through #3, any of these guys could be gone before #4. But one will be left standing.

I might find my way there myself. Or maybe not.

The one thing that makes Fairley vastly different than past DT's you've pimped is his pass rush ability. It sets him apart from the parade of fatties who have most often been linked to the Bengals in past drafts. As for past DT's with better than average pass rush ability Fairley looks far more ready to contribute immediately than someone like Amobi Okoye.

John Thornton did an interesting piece on the Bengals getting an elite player at #4 regardless of who falls to them. Not only did he make the same Warren Sapp comparison that I did, but his four player short list ranks the prospects in exactly the same way I would. Green, Fairley, Bowers, Peterson.

So the real question asks which players won't be available when the Bengals pick, not which player is ranked the highest or which fits the best....prompting me to wonder what the odds are that those who have planted their flags in Camp Fairey or Camp Green will eventually have to fold their tents and move.

Edit: Panthers new head coach Ron Rivera says team will continue playing a 4-3 scheme.

If the pick is Clemson DE DaQuan Bowers, that means that they are saying that current DE Michael Johnson won’t be a full time starter going forward.

Personally, I think Michael Johnson is at his best as a pass rush specialist... not a 3 down lineman. Bowers best attribute is his bull rush and his size... which means he can kick it inside to DT on passing downs allowing for an unblockable MJ/Bowers/Atkins/Dunlap front four on passing downs. Oops... I just jizzed in my pants.

If they select Georgia WR AJ Green, they will either be ending the Chad Ochocinco era or sitting the young duo of Simpson and Caldwell on the bench again.

Yes... please let the Chad era end! As for Simpson/Caldwell, there needs to be more WR depth on this team. Whether it is AJ Green in the 1st or not... they need to address the WR situation if for no other reason than having enough talent at the position to finally give Chad his walking papers.

If they select Auburn DT Nick Fairley, they will be saying that DT Pat Sims is not starting material.

Are there people who think Sims is starting material? Besides, Fairley and Peko would be downright nasty as starters with Atkins in on passing downs. Personally I'd keep Sims around for goalline stands and kick Tank Johnson to the curb.

If they select LSU DB Patrick Peterson, they will be saying goodbye to DB Johnathan Joseph.

Is this true? I thought Peterson was equally likely to end up a FS as a CB, depending on who drafts him. Isn't this exactly what Marvin has been saying he wants from the FS position... a physical guy with coverage skills? If he is a true CB, then I'm dead against the pick. Resign your own successful 1st round picks!

Anyway... I don't think it's going to be an issue, simply because I expect Denver to take Peterson. I think Champ Bailey is going to go try to win a championship... probably signing with the Pats, which means leaving Denver with a hole in the secondary. The Bengals will get whoever falls to them, and I'll be almost equally happy with any of the remaining three.

I am against the selection of A.J. Green simply because of this, there are about 500 WRs in this draft with size and speed, can anyone say with confidence that they think A.J. Green is going to make a markedly better pro than Julio Jones? or Jon Baldwin? All three of those guys have similar production in college, all three had bad starting QBs all three played on a major college team against major college competition, all three are 6'4"+ and 220+ lbs, and all three have been recorded at between 4.48 and 4.49 in the 40 yard dash. Just saying I have seen nothing in the video that tells me one of these receivers is markedly better than another.

That being said Peterson is markedly better than every other DB in this draft (not only the best Corner but the best Safety as well), Fairley is markedly better than every DT, and Von Miller is markedly better than any other Linebacker (6'2" 243 lbs and has been recorded at 4.46 with 26.5 sacks in the last two years on a defense where he was the only Premium NFL prospect on the roster). At the #4 pick you must draft an impact player not just a guy who may or maynot be better than another guy carrying a 2nd rd grade.

I was thinking the same thing. Marv has always preached that he wants guys that have coverage skills at the safety position. I believe that any of the above mentioned will make this team better. However, which one will be the difference maker? Which one will be the guy that puts the Bengals defense (or offense) over the top? I have to believe that it would be Peterson....at safety. If he is as advertised, how much would he change the dynamics of our defense? Not to play copy-cat but I'd love to have a dominant safety like Troy or Ed Reed. How much better are those two teams when they are on the field? I like Roy Williams but he is older and injury prone. This guy might be the answer. And to complete the d-backfield, I think they need to make a serious evaluation about JJoe. He is injury prone too and is he worth spending that kind of money on? Or do you have anyone else (Trent, Wade) that might be serviceable? In an ideal world I would like to keep JJoe and get Peterson.

If Peterson is gone I would think about a D-lineman. I don't know enough about Bowers or Fairley but I worry about another unmotivated player like Big A. I am not sure our D-line coach can elevate them if they are slackers. As an aside I also hope that these young guys keep their heads on straight this offseason, especially Dunlap. We can't afford any regression, that seems to accompany success the year before.

As for a wide receiver, I think that is a "nice to have" pick. I listed several big name first round WR from the last 5-10 years in a previous post and none of them have won a Super Bowl. Looks at Pittsburgh, they have Mike Wallace (3rd round). They burned a No. 2 on Limas Sweed who people forget is their version of Jerome Simpson. You can find good wideouts. I don't think this team needs to burn the No. 4 pick on a receiver. If they decide to keep Chad, I hope the departure of TO will help him focus and take the leadership role as the senior WR (and player) on the team.
