ArmyBengal Posted February 24, 2009 Report Share Posted February 24, 2009 I've also come around to seeing Orakpo being a good pick at #6 if they think the OT position can wait until the 2nd or RT in the 3rd. Biggest reason is knowing that we also need help at the LB position and them throwing him into the mix there. Pollack was the best DE in college the year we drafted him and they immediately stuck him at LB. The same could be said of Orakpo. You would have Orakpo, Jones, and Rivers at the LB positions with Geathers, Sims, Peko, and Odom on the line.That really doesn't bother me one bit and allows them the opportunity to throw in the 3-4 mixes we've spoken about as the defense progresses. He's probably my 3rd favorite player in the entire draft, in terms of what he could bring to the Bengals. I just don't see him as a three-down DE for the Cincinnati Bengals, in the AFC North, as some obviously do.. The problem is, where do you put Geathers or Odom, as 2 of your highest paid defenders? I know that some may argue that you can shift Geathers to SLB but in reality, Geathers is a much better DE than OLB and only played there when the Bengals were in a pinch for able bodies. What the Bengals and Marvin Lewis are looking for is a guy that can make an impact on 3rd down immediately and eventually be an every down OLB, in the Peter Boulware mode. You haven't heard Marvin yet mention needing a Micheal McCrary type of player on defense, which would represent a player that plays DE exclusively. For the record, I think Orakpo would be very good in a pash rushing role but I think Maybin is a future NFL sacks leader- type of OLB/DE, whereas I see Orakpo as a a 8-10 sack guy who is better in the running game. I don't see either as starting players next year for the Bengals and if that's the case, you must go with the player with the greater upside. Maybin is a future star but both are very solid players. The only way I want to see him in stripes is if he were to fall to the 2nd, but that won't happen either.Ron Brace is intriguing to me if they are still considering a DT prospect, but I still don't think we will get one that early. You haven't heard Marvin yet mention needing a Micheal McCrary type of player on defense, which would represent a player that plays DE exclusively.Geathers is a much better passrush specialist then he is 3down defensive end...He had ONE YEAR and that was when Robinson was playing run does & he would relieved him...Other teams fans would be calling for players head to roll if his production dropped off this much after getting a new contract 2 years ago....then there is the argument we can't put this much money in passrush...why not? passrush is one of the most important things when you look at winning & successful teams...too much money? How about the colts who pay Mathis as much as we pay our starting ends and then have Dwight a top 5 payed defensive player? The Giants the year they won the superbowl were stacked on passrush...Steelers who had one best defenses & worst offensive lines.....PS,Maybin seems like total project pick he played this year 230 and didn't put weight on till the combine which in return he ran slow.... I really like Maybin in this draft and he has the frama to get much bigger after he gets under an NFL weight program. He's only 20 years old and will be one of the youngest players in the NFL next season. He was close to 250 pounds at the Combine, which is bigger than Robert Mathis is.
